US gave Iraq its weapons

Washington Post

Disturbing article, whats also interesting is how a lot of the people in the Bush administration worked for Reagan and Bush the senior.   Too bad the online version does not have that pic of Rumsfeld and Hussain shaking hands like in the actual paper.

Re: US gave Iraq its weapons

I really get a colossal bug up my azz from those who can't see that selling arms to the 'nation of opportunity du jour' as a function of the 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend' (school?) of thought is a really stupid way to conduct foreign policy.

DavidMichael, the dangerous thing about your argument is that you're merely using the existence of a reality to justify its continuance, even if it's bad.

I totally agree with isaly on this one.  Right now, we happen to funding Georgia (no, not the one above FL) and it sickens me.  It will come back to bite us just like Iraq and Afganistan.

Well, in the case of Irak, what are you goin to say?
Sumthin like "Hey, Saddam, give me my ball back"?

I'd love to hear his answer to that request!
Please understand that I have the greatest of respect for the US of A and the flag and maybe my english expression was not good, but what I wanted to indicate (in a somewhat satirical way) was that it is high time that we really DO examine WHO we give weapons to.
We shaould ALSO examine why our leaders suddenly choose to go after an undoubted bogeyman - when the REAL problem is something and someone and a Country almost half a World away.
A leader who cannot see that is NOT worthy of holding high office and committing his Country to War.

Lets also not forget that we gave weapons to the Taliban and Ossama Bin ladden.

I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you.  That amuses me.

Also, Ho Chi Mihn, our arch-enemy throughout Vietnam, was originally a CIA operative (OSS).

If we'd learned anything from history we wouldn't be in this situation now.

Of course, you're assuming that Saddam's going to try and put one up our wazoo. . . no proof of that

and, of course, our gov. isn't admitting to having armed him. . . they're trying to spin it as all being stuff Riff Raff and Simon bar Sinister developed for the purpose of terrorizing people.

Re: US gave Iraq its weapons

Of course some US companies got permission to sell stuff to oil-rich Iraq. It is true, no doubt about it.

But let's maintain a sense of perspective.

In the (1991) Gulf War we up against Soviet and Chinese-made tanks, italian land mines (nasty buggers) South African artillery, berets made in New Zealand (don't ask me how I know, I know) French airplanes and  radios.

Honestly, I never encountered any US-made stuff at all. I am sure it was there, but I never saw it.

So anyway, everyone had a finger in this filthy pie.

For whatever it is worth.

Re: US gave Iraq its weapons

If no weapons had been sold in the past, then literally hundreds (don't ask where I got that figure from, but I do have the evidence) of standups would be unable to make the "look at the receipt" joke about any WMD that might be out there.
