Xfree86 or Apple X11?
I know the apple one is something like a .3 beta, and not sure if the Xfree86 is more than that, but which one? I recently installed open office 1.0.3 on my laptop and I had the choice between the two. I chose the free86 version because I think it's past beta stage. I will probably install this on my tower at home too, so should I give Apple's X11 a whirl? Is it easy to update when they release new versions? Thanks for any info.

Re: Xfree86 or Apple X11?
I've been using Apple's X11 (beta 2 and beta 3), which, from app info, is based on Xfree86 4.6.1, with OpenOffice 1.0.1 since February and no show stoppers here.
One area that I haven't been successful at, is the OpenOffice launchers that are supposed to start X11 (if not already running) and then start OpenOffice. But, having said that, I've spent exactly zero time trying to trouble shoot them. OpenOffice is the only X11 app I've been using so it's no problem to start X11 and then from the "Applications" menu in X11, start OpenOffice.
Updating Apple's X11 was dead simple, I can't remember the particulars (i.e.: if a restart was necessary or not).

Re: Xfree86 or Apple X11?
I remember reading something on the OpenOffice.org website about it being a little easier to install OOo and get it running under X11, but there were issues with font and printer recognition. I've got the final Darwin beta of OOo running under X11 on my G4, and it was pretty easy to set up, but OOo won't recognize my printer, a cheapo Canon S400 color inkjet. The printer setup utility seems to look only for Postscript printers, which mine is not. I also can't figure out how to add to its default font library. Hmmm... You think maybe there's a reason Xfree86 comes bundled with OOo?

Just released today. Final X11 beta.
And thanks for the info. I just learned that X11 is going to be built into Panther, so i think I'll get a little more acquainted with apple's x11.

Re: Xfree86 or Apple X11?
Well, downloaded OOo1.0.1.3.1, all 170+MBytes, all updated and all working just nicely. Even StarOffice was a beast to download in its day.
Just checked the printing functions, just to make sure, but no problems here with an Epson Sylus C80 on a USB hookup. I do have CUPS (Common UNIX Printing System) running, and I believe it may be providing the connection between OOo and the system printer. Print Center shows "<stdin>" as the source while a job is active, rather that the actual application.
Good Luck!
