pixlet!
One of the items Steve mentioned this week was a new film compression algorithm called "pixlet". it is essentially a way to compress a film with wavelet compression so it can be sent quickly over a network. He was saying that they developed it for film studios and production houses for a way for them to have full screen, full quality playback for previewing their work quickly. I smell something much bigger for this. Can somebody say "iTunes video store"?

Why would you use iTunes to download video? Wouldn't Quicktime make more sense?

discussion
(QuickTime version in Panther)
It crashes the program every time I try and encode with it. But what I'm more interested in is Apple version of H.263. Its super easy to configure and the quality is very impressive.

They were also saying that Pixlet took some seroius hardware to run to play back nicely...

Oops! must have missed tht part! My bad. Actually, I'm surprised it's that big. I work in medical imaging, and we use wavelet compression. it is incredibly efficent, and it is very scalable. you can compress almost to 100:1 with almost no loss of quality. I still think this will be used for more than just film studios, however.
BTW, I said iTunes video store because we already have the iTunes music store. Of course you wouldn't use iTunes to view movies, silly rabbit!

Re: pixlet!
Pixlet gets 20:1 compression , and is for pro use, i.e they will not be making huge sacrifices in picture quality just so you can send it over the internet, that's what divX does. As for other uses, iMovie etc.

3 MB per second is the same datarate as DV format.

Re: pixlet!
I think the Pixlet info says anywhere from 3 MB/s at most and 6GB to 275 MB at the smallest.
