Your first computer.

This has probably been done already many times, I guess I missed it.

I got my first real computer when I was about 11-12 (circa 1996), it was a Performa 6320 CD with a 120 MHz PPC, 16 MB of RAM with System 7.5.5 on it. Really sweet machine, I don't have it anymore though  sad .

What about you?

Re: Your first computer.

Mac Classic running System 6.something. I played Loom on it I remember. And there was this cool thing called the "Internet" that you could access via The Well.

Then I got a Quadra 610. I think that was the best, most reliable computer I've ever owned. I had absolutely no problems with that box...ahh, the memories. Myst, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, The Dig, Monkey Island, Prince of Persia. I miss you Quadra 610.

Weird.  I was going to say the same thing.  I was going to say an Apple II in about 1982 or so when I was 11 or 12, and then not another Apple until last October when I switched from PC via a PowerMac 867 DP.

My Dad is a teacher, and he brought the Apple computer home from school on the weekends so I could use it when I was in 6th grade.  I taught myself to program.  That experience really changed my life, since it introduced me to technology and logical thinking, which has really affected my career choice and livelihood.

Re: Your first computer.

I still got the most pleasure from Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. I loved the way there were three ways to beat the game. The puzzles were really inventive and the story was fantastic. But PoP was a great game. It was cool when you got towards the end how everything got weird, like the Leap of Faith part, jumping through the mirror and that scary evil twin of yours...

What were some other games? Did anyone play Loom?

Damn. Now I want to play all of those old games again. Is there a website where I can find them?

Re: Your first computer.

First mac was in 1997.  It was a PPC 6500/225.  We got that, an Apple monitor, and a printer all at Sears.  The 6500 had a 225Mhz 604ev processor, 32mb of ram, 4gb hd, floppy drive, 4x cd rom (iThink) and system 7.5.5, that I later upgraded to 8.1 and then 8.6.  My sister has it right now, and then when my other sister leaves for college, she is going to take it.

When I was one and a half in 1984, my parents bought an Apple IIe with dual 5.25" floppy drives and a green screen.

I had it until I was 15 and didn't see a GUI until about 1996.

I remember being envious of the few people I knew who also had Apple ]['s or //e's who had dual floppy disk drives.  We only had one drive, so you were always swapping floppies.  Later I upgraded our //e with a 256KB (yes, KB) memory card and I would create virtual disk partitions on it, in place of actually having a second floppy disk drive.  That card was huge too.

I am a civil engineer specializing in water resources.  I build computer models of water, sewer, storm and drainage systems.  I love computer modeling, and the logical steps involved in writing programs are very similar to the logical steps in computer simulation models.  Often, it is necessary to program sequence of operations or logical controls into the models, but throughout my career, the process, thinking and logic that I learned while writing programs in basic and logo when I was 12-15 have carried through my career.

Re: Your first computer.

A mac lc 575(damn, my pc keyboard is acting up, I had to use the keypad to type 7). This was around 1994, and I was about 11 or 12. I was whining to my parents like crazy saying "I want a computer" over and over. I didn't care if it was a mac or pc. We ended up getting the 575 which I still own today. It's actually my only mac, but I'm awaiting arrival of a pm 8500. I just couldn't take the 33mhz 040 slowness anymore. But my new 604 150mhz is going to scream. I know, I live in the past, but I think people are spoiled with processing power nowadays. I once tried a g3 400mhz tower running os 10.1, and it was perfectly fast, I don't know what people are talking about when they say older G4's are too slow.

On the school playground, two kids in kindergarten were arguing about something, and one of them started crying. A teacher comes up to them and asks what is wrong. The kid who is crying points to the other kid and goes "he insulted my operating system!"
