If you like Panther... good...but...

After using Panther for a few hours, I already found a few issues.

1. Safari 1.0 does not like Panther.  For whatever reason, is is still buggy to the point where it does not like phpbb boards, or anything that deals with databases.

2. It does not give you the option to change web browsers, since personally I don't like crashing a lot in Safari.

3. Permissions are screwy, after the install of Panther I couldn't use 90% of my adobe apps, so I had to fix permissions.

4. Microsoft Entourage, doesn't like the new keychain, it continuously keeps requesting for access to it, when in theory it has full access to it already. This is starting to make be believe that Apple and MS are really starting to fall out...

5. iChat AV, I can't tell if it's the full version or not (probably not)

6. Panther does not like Apache 2, or the latest version of MySQL.

7. i-Fire camera doesn't work (although the iSight is awesome)

What is good...

It's a pre-release, so don't expect all the bugs out, but overall...

1. Speed, a lot more responsive.

2. IE flies it in.

3. Quicktime movies have nearly no data-loss.

4. Xcode! Woot, need I say more, it really is great to work with.

5. iDisk,   Finally great mirroring capabilities.

6. Finder, Finally, great functionality...hopefully soon everyone will be able to play with it.

Well for now, that's all I got to say, still working on a few things to see if it's going to work or not...

Got questions I'll try to answer, but...

If I remember correctly, there is supposed to be a special version of Safari that is integrated into the OS or something along those lines.  As for the rest of the ranting, it's still being developed so all those things should and will be fixed within time.

Re: If you like Panther... good...but...

interesting that they'd integrate safari into the OS especially after the stink everyone made with IE/Windows.

You say Panther feels more responsive, what is the computer like you are running on?

Memory, Mghz, video card?

Thanks

As I stated before, it's still being worked on, but overall, there are some things that I find that even in a beta should work... like Apple's own version of Safari...

As for Safari being integrated it's not, it's an individual app, same as before...

But I would of though since they designed it, they would of made it work with 10.3

The fact is, this ISN'T a "beta."  It is a Developer Preview (i.e. an alpha version) so of course things don't work.  The underlying core APIs are what they want the developers to play with, not Safari.

Not that I need to tell you this, but make sure you report these 3 bugs. smile  They will make my life, and a lot of other people's lives a whole lot easier if they are fixed before the final release.

Also, is Toast working for you?  I heard it wasn't for someone.

Safari is working fine for me under Panther.  No major complaints so far...

Third party apps seem to be fine.

Re: If you like Panther... good...but...

i used it for a bit, there were too many flaws for me to be productive with it...

1. my PCI NIC goes extremely slow, and i need it to route to my PC.
2. if i right click on the desktop, and click change background, it wont do anything (which is weird, becuase since that installation, in jag if go apple menu>system prefrences, nothiung happens)
3. iKey doesnt work.

if i could fix those things, then i would use panther daily.

things i like about panther:

1. switching is cool, but i dont need it
2. finder is fantastic.
3. expose is really cool, and i can see it coming in handy a lot.

I have an issue posting, etc on here with Safari 1.0 in 10.3.

As well that I have had several beach ball senarios in 10.3 with safari.

I have a dual 1.25 G4, and 2 GB of Ram.

Re: If you like Panther... good...but...

Like I said, I have no probs (posting here or otherwise) with Panther and Safari 1.0.

I have lost my printer, however, and am busy working on that  (it's an HP multi-function that's always been a problem).  I have also been getting false error messages occasionally.

I'm running Panther on a dual 867 with a GB of memory (just upgraded from ball bearings in a blender to the power source replacement, which makes work less head ache inducing...), and I'm impressed more by the increase in speed than the bells and whistles.

I'm running Panther on a Quicksilver 867Mhz with 640MB RAM, 40GB HD, nVidia GeForce 4 MX and it's pretty good.  UI is more responsive.  smile  i did some xBench benchmarks.. the score went up in total about 20 points.

Ahem, if you also noticed I said This  and if you noticed the time difference between the two posts I think you will see that I finally had some time to actually use Panther, but at first glance, panther is nearly flawless when it comes to an OS period.  I still stand by that.  At first glance there is no need for an update.  But after various things I have done, I can see that there is some room for improvement.

So, as I will say once, I will say again.

Panther as an OS upon first release, is nearly flawless, and is practically perfect when it comes to first releases 1.0 of anything can guarantee bugs, but this version of 10.3 is quite good, but as an OS period, it does need some upgrading. Not much, but just a little.
