bwah-hahahaha
i am uncoerced by your grammaticalfullness....
you
actually, your more of an assclown:
*tips glass to the confuzed1*
hey,
i have been doing analog capture for years, starting with my ppc8500 back in '96 - trust me confuzed1, just about ANY quicktime device that can capture at THAT resolution (higher than just about any source you are giving it except your dvd player), should be more that pleasing to the eye.
plus, via QT pro, you can filter and play with the quality even more if you need to...
are you guys "sure" about the macrovision thing though, if you ran it through a vcr, it might disable that... did you run a dvd right to the tvr (it should let you - fair use allows for personal back-up, damnit!!!)
anything you type can and will be used against you

Re: the Formac TVR is "Kick-Neck"
I currently have the ProTV/Stereo card in my G4, but haven't had much time to test it. I know they stopped producing it about six months ago, but it does everything the new external stuff does. I bought it so I can record shows while I'm at school, and it can also record from analog camcorders and VCRs and such. It's a pretty interesting tool, especially if you don't feel like spending a lot for something like TiVo. Formac makes some cool stuff.

I am positive it ignores macrovision. I've hooked my dvd player to the formac via svideo and have recored clips of stuff and entire movies...

A note to MacAddictfan--
Are you still happy with it? After this much time, have you had any trouble with it at all? I think you may have helped convince me that this is the unit for me. I just want to be sure first. Thanks in advance.

Re: the Formac TVR is "Kick-Neck"
I'm VERY happy with my Formac. I've tried to get to digital cable channels, and I believe I can do it. I'm hooking up component cables through the VHS machine from the Antenna Cable.
Only problem, and I don't think this has anything to do with the Formac is that when I encode DV in ffmpegx to divx (for archiving shows, tiny file size), alternating lies of blur and sharp qualities lace themselves up and down the file. I've asked the creator of ffmpegx if this is a known problem in ffmpegx, and I have yet to get an answer.
I don't believe that is a Formac problem tho.
the TVR is very compatible with iMovie, AND if u plug it into your Firewire port and start up iChat AV, you can broadcast TV to all your friends!
(for some reason ichat reflects the video tho.. Prolly bec. when u're aiming a camera at yourself from the front, the video has to be reversed)
I LOVE this formac TVR.
You're gonna need a splitter and a bunch of coaxial cables if u intend to get dig. cable channels on your Formac, basic cable channels on your formac, have a working VHS, and a working TV + cable box.
You need a cable/satellite connection, so don't think that you can get free cable off of this thing.

Re: the Formac TVR is "Kick-Neck"
So, are you saying that if I have digital cable (I do), then I won't be able to receive any channels on it, or that I will only be able to receive the first 125? And by saying that it will be necessary to have a lot of coax and a splitter, do you mean that you have to use your digital cable box as your tuner? And finally, for this last case, once again, is that only to receive channels beyond the first 125?

Re: the Formac TVR is "Kick-Neck"
ok, heres how it works...
You get a 3 way splitter. You plug one coax fro splitter into Formac.
one coax into cable box (and subsequently your TV), and if u want dig. cable channels, you plug your last coax into a VHS machine.
With this setup u get all basic cable channels. You need component or S-Video Cables to connect your VHS to your formac to get one dig. cable chan at a time. Whichever one that the VHS is pointed to at that moment.
(I'm going to be setting this up tomorrow. I'm not sure if i have to split the signal after the cable box, or before the cable box {into the VHS} though)

Re: the Formac TVR is "Kick-Neck"
The phillips TV tuner picks up any BASIC digital cable channels that come with your cable account. You can opt to plug the cable (from outside) that carries the channels directly into your formac. If you want to watch cable on your TV as well as your formac, you obviously need to split the signal.
You use the built in tuner for the basic channels, I believe you use the VHS/cable box tuner for dig. cable channels (as i have written, i have yet to test this, but formac says that it works).
Basic channels mean channels that you could recieve without a dig. cable package... ESPN, CBS, SCIFI, COMEDY...etc
Its not necessarily the first 125. The formac checks all frequencies for channels when you first configure it. So... you will probably get the first 70 or so channels (at least that's how it is in Western PA)
Digital cable channels is something like: Tech TV, the Mystery channel, G4.

I think it's some sort of alternate way of saying "kick ass" used by pussies who giggle when they hear the word "titmouse."

Kick Neck: watch one of the staff videos... was it Narasu who first used the phrase?
The one where she turns into Lara Croft and kicks the neck of all the bad guys. As well as some other various parts of their bodies. Mainly the one that rhymes with Pass... or Shut... or even Perrier... sort of.

The funny thing is that I immediately thought of the word that rhymes with "Pass" and "Perrier," but I had to stop and think about "Shut."

Sorry my mistake.
It's composite, not component.
