My AirPort sucks
ok, i have been consistently losing my AirPort signal since 3pm yesterday (Monday) afternoon... i haven't been able to keep a signal for more than about 5 minutes at a time... and now this morning, i can't even get a signal sitting next to the damned base station, so i can't go in and mess around with the settings...
i am honestly at a total loss as for what to do... i've unplugged it, reset it, let it sit with no power and no connection for almost 30 minutes (after which it worked for a bit, but crapped out on me overnight)...
help?... please?... any suggestions would be great...

Re: My AirPort sucks
You bought an actual Apple brand base station? Is it one of the original ones with the faulty capacitor? Probly not. It woulda crapped out months ago.
Anyhooz, sounds broken to me. You might take your laptop to an Apple Store or other open network to make sure IT isn't the problem.

Yeah, I'd make sure it wasn't the airport card in the Laptop that wasn't the problem. if you have another machine to test it out, do so.

is the base station next to something like a florescent light, TV, or moniter.

Re: My AirPort sucks
its been working fine for over a year now, no problems... its just decided to crap out all of a sudden... this is honestly the first problem i have ever had with it...
its the snow base station (dual ethernet), not the original graphite base station...
i have no apple store in my area to take it to... the nearest one is about a 3 and a half hour drive away (in atlanta)... anywho...
i may try and take it to the local cafe' here in town... its wireless enabled, so i guess from that i will beable to tell if it is the card or the base station having the problem... thanks for the suggestions so far... please keep them coming!

Re: My AirPort sucks
You can configure your basestation by connecting it to your mac with an ethernet cable. Try changing the channel. Did you recently get a new cordless phone, or another wireless something or other? That could be interfering with your signal.
You have an absolutely breath-taking... heiney. I mean, that thing's good. I wanna be friends with it.

Re: My AirPort sucks
Ok, I don't own an Airport base station and haven't seen one in months so I could be completely wrong, but doesn't the base station have an external power supply? You said that you left it unplugged for a period of time and then your wireless network worked for a while after you plugged it back in.
<Possible scenario>
The power supply overheats and solder joint inside cracks. You leave it unplugged long enough to cool back down and the solder crack closes (doesn't re-fuse back together). You plug it back in and it works until the power supply heats up again and the crack reappears.
</Possible scenario>
So I guess the short answer is try swapping out the power supply (if possible).

Re: My AirPort sucks
When the base station craps out do the lights on the front go out? That would tell me its a power supply, and its not card related at all. In fact, I haven't read much about AirPort cards crapping out.
By the way: the topic should be "MY AirPort Sucks". Don't generalize it after having only 1 problem.
Push the button, Frank.

Call Apple, maybe? I dunno if they will help you for free or not, though, unless you have AppleCare

Re: My AirPort sucks
what was the lest few things you changed to your home when it began to crap out? if you live in an apartment or other type of close-in housing, you might have a neighbor who just bought a 2.4ghz phone something along those lines. i would suggest downloading a program called kismac to see what else is around you as far as networks go. you can also use it to measure signal strength as you switch the base station to different channels to see if one of those works better. exercise some caution when using kismac though, it uses its own 802.11 drivers and has experimental drivers built in that could fry your hardware (if you turn the option on- they warn you of it too)
Warmest regards.
Sincerely,
Kevin

Re: My AirPort sucks
just a bump and an update...
i seem to lose almost all reception on the weekends and during the week, if i lose reception, i can put my iBook to sleep for a couple of hours, wake it up, and then have reception for a bit and then i will lose it again...
but i have absolutely no reception on the weekends...
am i just going crazy?... or should i go door-to-door inspecting people's houses?

I got yer back.
It may not be anything YOU have bought... the frequency range for 802.11 is pretty crowded. Cordless phones, baby monitors, etc., all use the same frequency band. One of your neighbors may have set up a new phone or something that could be causing interference. If it's crapping out on the weekends, then my guess is that there are lot of new cordless phones in your neighborhood. (father's day gifts maybe?)
Try changing the channel as others have suggested.
Good luck!

Re: My AirPort sucks
You may want to try elevating your base station too. I was having similar problems with mine until I set it up on top of a stand that raises it about a foot above my desk.

Re: My AirPort sucks
thanks for helping me out with the topic, madman...
i will try the elevated base station thingy, but i have a feeling thats not my problem... right now, i am sitting next to my base station, but still getting no signal (i pulled the ethernet cable out and put it directly into the iBook)...
but i am willing to try anything... well, other than shaving myself nekkid and running through a field of wild daisies whilst being chased by Peruvian alcapas...
thanks!

Antennea on the iBook's goes bad. I know. Mine did. Make sure your iBook's reception hasn't pooped out before you blame the airport.
