Real quick: Getting rid of network login on 98

I know this is a popular question and I apologize, but I'd appreciate anyone who could give me an answer.

When I start up Windows 98, I get that login screen asking for my password  to log on to the Microsoft network or whatever.

In short, I have no network and just hit cancel every time. How can I get rid of the prompt?

First step...

under Network Properties (right-click Network Neighborhood, choose "Properties"), select Client for Microsoft Networks, then click "Properties". Make sure the "Log on to Domain" option is unchecked. That will get rid of the domain network logon panel when you start.

BTW I absolutely hate Win98.

Didn't work sad There was one option, "Log on to Windows NT Domain" and it was already unchecked. I checked and unchecked it to make sure but nothing happened.

...there is an option to "Remove" though...

Re: Real quick: Getting rid of network login on 98

So the first possiblity was a bust... Sorry about that.

Under that panel there's a selection called "Primary Network Logon". You ought to be able to select either "Windows Logon", which will log you into the local machine; or "Client for Microsoft Networks", which will log you into the domain. Which one do you have selected? That will determine which logon screen you get.

The domain logon screen has three text boxes: username, password, and domain. The other has only two: username and password.

If you are only logging onto Windows, you can delete your *.PWL file to remove your password, then log on again as yourself. It will assume you are a new user... just enter a blank password, and Windows SHOULD stop putting up a login screen. I don't THINK that will ruin any data or settings or anything, but I can't guarantee that.

Sorry the previous didn't work. Not a pat answer, but since I got this iBook, I've completely ignored my 98 PC. My kids are happy: they get it for playing their "Blues Clues" games all day long now wink

Re: Real quick: Getting rid of network login on 98

I have the Microsoft Network one on, the dialogue with two fields comes up (no domain).

I don't know what a *.pwl file is but I'll try switching over to Windows log in and see if that helps. I know on my brother's comp once I saw a dialogue that said "Leave the password field blank to never see this dialogue again" or something. I thought that was cool smile

Daw crap it asked to insert the CD and then it couldn't find some file...

Alright the dialogue said if I don't enter a password I won't ever get the prompt again. Yay big_smile

Ok. Go into your network properties and make sure "Windows Login" is selected.

Then hit "Start", "Find", "Files or Folders". In the search box type "*.pwl"

Delete the pwl files and log out. The Windows login window should come up asking you for a password. hit "OK" with no password. It should ask you to verify, just hit "OK" again.

You should now be able to start the computer without seeing that login prompt again.
