Re: What transmission do you drive?

LOTRfan, you're absolutely right.

Driving an Audi TT 6-speed with turbocharger is the most fun I've had so far. We might buy it, in fact big_smile big_smile. When you get up to about 6000 RPM and the turbo kicks in, it's one of the most gloriously powerful sounds you will ever hear...

But the thing I like best about the standard is the wide, wide torque band. I can really piss off/impress my friends by powering around a 120 degree turn in first gear at about 30 mph big_smile

Also the feeling that you're really in control of the car - you are driving somewhere, rather than being driven somewhere by the car. Our minivan, besides being bigger than the U.S.S. Nimitz, is like pulling on the reins of a horse while riding a sofa. Not interesting at all.

A turbocharged TT has a teeny compressor wheel.  If you're not feeling boost before 6000RPM, there's something wrong with the turbo.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I like automatics because they have multiple disc clutch setups that allow you to pass real power through them without destroying parts.  Sure, you can move to double and triple plate hydraulic clutches with a manual, but those really pale in comparison to a well setup 700R4 or TH350 behind some big block stump-pulling power.

Well, maybe it wasn't 6000. I wasn't really watching the tachometer, but whatever.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

ohhhh, i just started learning how to drive stick last week..... yeah, it was my first time driving and this was the result.....

(if the link dosent work, and you get the crappy error, try to reload it)

That can't possibly be true. I mean, if you did try a manual and get that, what happened? The worst I've done to my car while I was learning was stripping a gear and stalling a lot.
Perhaps if you tried to start with the wheels turned to the right, just behind that tree, and attempted to rev the engine too high so you wouldn't stall: But you'd still need some kind of massive acceleration to get that. I'll work it out when someone can tell me what the modulus of that car's bumper is (it's probably on the order of 100m/sec^2).

Eh, that was pointless _and_ stupid! Woohoo!

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I used to be all about the manual, but after a few times in traffic jams automatic is the way to go for a daily driver. The best however, is triptronic.

I have an automatic stickshift, it's like having a manual transmission except you can't mess up!

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I like my tramsmition, is automatic with selections for D, 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Put it in 3 and it will start in 1, shift up to 2, then 3 and not get to 4 or 5. If your in 4 and you go down to 3, it down shifts you. basically, manual when you want, automatic when you dont.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I've driven both.  Sick is fun, but when you're just doing the daily A to B driving it can get old.  My Mazda 6 has an automatic with a manual mode.  It allows you to up and down shift on the fly, it will also hold a shift past red line before it shifts for you.  The lag between shifts isn't as tight as a true manual, but it is far better than the "autostick" mode in my parents Chrysler...

The old, fully hydraulic, automatic transmission is one tough beast... now-a-days they stuff them with electronics that burn up at the drop of a hat...  You just have to take good care of an automatic, drain and flush it regularly.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

I got a four-speed auto '89 Holden Commodore. When you got a 3.8L Buick V6 in fornt of you, the tranny doesn't matter too much. big_smile It matters even less if your lucky enough to have the latest model V8 Commodore with the 5.7 Chevy GenIII drool

This said, I still like the feel of driving a manual...not for any particular reason though...

I taught myself to drive a manual four months ago in my dad's '84 Holden Rodeo ute, and I've never so much as crunched a gear. up

The old '86 Mitsubishi Pajero's nice to drive too. I would feel stupid driving one of these with auto transmission... it doesn't seem right on a fourbie shrug

If asked which is my favourite though, I'd still say the auto, cause I'm lazy and there is less you have to worry about while driving.

Manual. I've never driven an auto, but i've been driven in them. Even on a top of the range mercedes (CL55), the change is slower than I can do in a manual, and then in a honda civic the change took ages.

Plus I just like the added interaction. The only auto i'd drive is Audi's DSG - 2 gearboxes and clutches so the change really is instant.

Re: What transmission do you drive?

'01 Ford Escape XLT... with the 200 HP V6. Ford put really horrible trannies in these. Mine's a 'four-speed' automatic, meaning three speeds with overdrive. It works. The thing's got power, you just can't exploit it too much for fear of screwing up the transmission.

My dad has an '02 Infiniti I35. That has a great transmission. It's a 4 or 5 speed auto (not sure which) mated to a 3.5 Liter 255 HP V6. I like driving it... fairly crisp shifts when you push it hard, nice and smooth when you don't.

if you know your car well enough you can make an auto shift up or down when you want it to

Re: What transmission do you drive?

automatic Beamers have an electronic kick-down switch under the accelerator pedal... floor it then push the pedal in a little way further, and see what happens... big_smile

even my dads old '77 520i has it... wait come to think of it, it's a manual... how does electronic kickdown work on a manual? confused
