Re: Bikes

Hopefully, when the weather gets nicer, I'll actually start mountain biking again. But then again, that's what I said last year, and it didn't really happen.

Yes, but this year when it's warm, you'll have a drivers liscense and a buddy with a fresh mountain bike (me). Can you feel the excitement?

Re: Bikes

I feel like a poseur as well, since i've barely had time/motivation/been in shape/a working bike/anyone to ride with since i started college in fall of 2000.

I've got a '97 Lemond Zurich thats stock except for an anatomic handle bar, flight saddle and Rolf Vector Comps.

My mountain bike is a '99 Trek 8000 thats only got the original wheels (and those need to be replaced, BAD), brakes, shifters, and front der and saddle. I put a SID XC on the front and XT on the drivetrain parts i replaced. Its a sexy bike. smile

I recently moved to madison, which always makes the list of bike friendly towns, so hopefully i'll be doing a lot more riding this spring

Re: Bikes

The bike in my avatar is a Giant Team ONCE TCR bike, aluminum frame w/ carbon fork

Campagnolo Chorus drivetrain
Spynergy Xaero wheelset (alloy rim, carbon PBO spokes, sealed swiss hubs)
Specialized Team Turbo 20mm tires
Shimano Ultegra brakeset (older model: lighter than anything made today)
Deda handlebars w/ anatomic grip, Syntace C-2 aero bars w/ bar-end shifters
Ritchey Logic Pro clipless pedals
Aztec teflon coated cables
16-17lbs total weight

Almost sold it on Ebay, but couldn't go thru with it.

I'll never forget the day I switched to clipless pedals.

I have yet to convert to clipless pedals, so I have not yet had that great 'first-day' experience wink.

Well, here's a preview of your first day:

thump!

wink

Seriously, clipless is so much better.  The control you get is unbelievable, that is, until you stop.... thump!

The only reason I have converted to clipless yet is because I don't do much cross country riding. I do mostly 'freeriding' and some downhill. I have definitely considered getting clipless for my track bike though. The only reason I haven't got them for that bike yet is because sometimes I use it as a commuter and I wouldn't want to have to put on different shoes everytime I wanted to ride. However, it probably will end up with clipless pedals at some point in the future.

It started out as mountain biking, and i got the lemond used as a highschool graduation present. I started doing a lot more road riding, because road riding made off road riding tons easier. Mountain biking is still my first love, but when i get back on the bike it'll be road riding, since i can't use the mountain bike until i get some new wheels sad

What kind of wheels do you have on the bike, and what's wrong with them? Are you thinking that you will be getting the new wheels anytime in the near future? Mountain biking is definitely the best biking.

Re: Bikes

Bontrager Rims, Bontrager front hub, LX rear hub.

They've been beat up pretty badly, and trueing them doesn't last that long. They just kind of suck up money, and i'm tired of it. They've gotten attention from 2 different guys at 2 different shops and i think they're beyond help.
I probably won't be getting wheels until summer at the earliest. I'll probably check with my connections to see how cheap i can get new wheels. There's a Trek factory in my hometown (Whitewater, WI. also the Trek Headquarters nearby in Waterloo, WI).

Know someone who works at trek, and you can get sweet discounts wink

That's good stuff. Bike shop connections are key. Well actually, connections anywhere are pretty ill.

Re: Bikes

Nice. Yeah, if you work at a shop, and you want a bike from a company of bikes you carry, you can do what they call an employee purchase. This is when you use your own credit card and order the bike straight from the company. And doing it this way, you get the bike for less than the shop gets the bike for. I did this for my mother, she got a $1300.00 bike for $700.00. It was a bike with Reynolds 853 tubing and a full Shimano 105 group. I'm sure I'll take advantage of this for myself at some point. Most of the stuff I buy at my shop is parts though. I've only bought one bike from the shop I work at, and that's the 24" BMX.

Just out of curiosity, how much money have you spent at your shop?

God, I don't even know. A couple thousand at least I'm sure. I've got nothing better to spend my money on though, so it's all good.

Re: Bikes

I had some old blue Trek mountan bike but its in peices now. After treating it like a bmx bike i just turned it into a salvage operation.

Now I ride a 2000 GT Bump 20" freestyle. I got it about a year and a half ago, but days after getting it a broke my collar bone and forgot about it for a while. Ive been riding it more now, but due to a recent snow storm im once again not riding. Anyhow, its mostly stock, but i have a few random modifications...mainly the S&M pro platform pedals, brand new snafu grips and bar ends, a fairly new SST Oryg detangler. I also got some Hexagon pegs but my fork needs to be hammered before one can fit on the front and actualy stay on. the rest is random stuff done by me..the chain is half the stock chain and half my mountain bike chain...didnt work that well at first but works like a champ now. I got a brand new specialized tube in my front tire...theres a bunch of other random stuff i cant remember...anyway. she holds together and thats all i care about.

Heh, me too.  Well, a few years ago that is.  Life at that point was beer and biking.  But not necessarily in that order.  wink

Re: Bikes

I built my bike this summer on a left over trek 2100 frame we got dirt cheap from the shop.  Aluminum frame, carbon fiber fork, ultegra parts, look pedals.  When I'm at school I ride almost every day I can, but i slack  majorly when I'm at home.

What? That actually worked? They aren't even the same width. You do know that a SRAM PC-1 BMX chain costs like 20$... Cause you could really hurt yourself pretty bad if your chain breaks.

It was kind of stiff the first few hours of riding but its fine now. It just comes down to im too lazy to go to the bike shop in town or mailorder it. Anyway, it works and im not dead yet so i dont care smile

Re: Bikes

I'm pretty surprised that that chain setup works too. Chains are one of the most temperamental part of bikes, and usually have to be exactly the right kind, size, etc. It's also surprising that it works just considering that those chains are two different widths. But hey, if it works for you, more power to you.
