Re: Bush on attacks on US troops: "Bring 'em on!"
I find it hard to believe that Bush or his speechwriters would be stupid enough to admit in public that they want iraqis to kill U.S. troops. Don't you?
No one here has said anything so ridiculous.
The problem with Bush's words is that they are antagonistic. They invite attacks. He can talk tough all he wants, but this is just stupid. It also sends a clear signal to our military personell that they are pawns, they are expendable in the political game. It seems to me that those folks are interested in hearing the language of diplomacy and going home at this point. And not "go ahead and attack them, as often as you like, they can take it!"
A terrible leader. A vicious elitist.
If the words "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" don't include the right to experiment with your own consciousness, then the Declaration of Independence isn't worth the hemp it was written on.

Re: Bush on attacks on US troops: "Bring 'em on!"
Bush is merely telling those who attack US and British -if he even considered the Brits - that the US policy and detirmination will not be affected by these attacks because the US military is strong enough to adsorb them and pay them back a hundredfold. He could have said it more sensibly - well if he was not G.Bush he could have said it more sensibly.

Way to rise above blind partisanship. I agree 100%.
Ouch! There goes what was left of my reputation.
Just to return to normal I suppose I should disagree with you agreeing with me.

I think Bush's main problem is that his messages are not clear. He looks lightweight to his allies but aggressive to people who are not necessarily America's enemies.

Maybe that's what we want. Maybe the plan is to draw out all those who would commit violent acts against out troops, rather than letting them hide and strike later. We just don't know.
That strategery doesn't even work on the kindergarten playground. You might get one idiot to say, "Bring it on? Now, while you're ready? Okay..." but everyone else would wait until you have your pants down in the bathroom.
It's far more likely that he is relatively incompetent, that he says stupid things very often, when not reading a prepared speech.

Yes.
We all know that terrorists and guerrilas always strike right when we expect them to.

Maybe? Maybe??
Man, you govinmn't-lovers really make me laugh. Tell you what: go up to a guy on the street and say, "let's go, bring it on!" and time how long it takes to start a fight (though they might just think you're a street freak and keep walking).
I'm really impressed that you've been so dilligent in trying to find ways to parse Bush's words, but no matter how you slice it, they were one thing and one thing only: an invitation to a fight.
I suspect you're right, that they're trying to draw out the rebels in order to crush them, but at least that hypothesis tacitly admits to what Bush was saying.
"Bring it on" isn't some kind of subtle statement on US foreign policy. Neither is, "you wanna go," "I'm gonna smurf you up," or "you wanna step outside." It has one meaning and one meaning only: "I want to fight now."
I say, grow a set of balls and just admit that. Yeesh.

You're right Shnick. Maybe it WASN'T really in invitation to fight, but an invitation to to compare cheerleading routines.

Who's this 'we' you speak of? Got a turd in your pocket? I've been born and raised in Texas, and, so far, the number of votes that he has gotten or will get from me is zero.

I think the number of votes Bush gets will be a good measure of how ridiculous our nation is. So I'm worried.

Re: Bush on attacks on US troops: "Bring 'em on!"
Sounds to me like GW is daring the Iraqis to "knock this chip off my shoulder." But it's not his shoulder. It's the shoulders of the troops who are over there.
WHAT A DICK!
But I think the real question is: how do these words and this attitude translate into Farsi?

Now that just doesn't make sense does it. In all the attacks since the war ended how many of the attackers have been killed or apprehended? Now weigh that number against the number of US soldiers killed and injured. If that is the tactic, and it isn't, then it's not working.
Even if you agree with Bush's message you have to admit that how he delivers the message is important and sometimes he fluffs it. This time he came across as belligerent and thoughtless and perhaps insensitive. This may not bother his die-hard supporters but would upset some of his moderate base and may send out the wrong message or make an already bad situation worse. That's just bad politics.

Re: Bush on attacks on US troops: "Bring 'em on!"
I think the problem is that he doesn't understand the international world in which he lives. If you look at those words in with only a US target audience, they are a rallying cry, if a bad one. The problem is when those words are turned sent live to every house in the world within seconds of them being said.
It's a paradox of how sharply dull I am.

I'm sure the families of the 168 dead appreciate remarks like "bring 'em on."
I think Bush should serve in Iraq, and not in a cushy desk position, either.
