When I was a kid, my mom bought a "yogurt maker". I was excited-- until I found out it wasn't a fancy gizmo with pumps and wheels, where you pour milk and berries into one end and get yogurt from the other. It was a stinkin' hot plate. Plus, this was at the height of her health food kick, so the only flavoring was hunney. Ever wonder why you never see hunney flavored yogurt? It's because it's not much better than plain.
My own favorite flavors are bluberry and strauberry.

Uhhhhh... one of the primary ingredients to that yogurt recipe is yogurt. If I already had yogurt, why the hell would I need to make it?

You see, Robert, in our society it takes yogurt to make yogurt.
Either that or, as chicken boy says, it's an easy way of getting the starter culture you need. Of course, you do need a yogurt with a live culture, which that page seems to fail to specify.

Usually when it goes mouldy or, in the case of particularly rich sour cream, when the fat starts to rancidify.

The presumption is that it's easier for you, Joe Consumer (or I guess Robert B. Consumer), to get your hands on some yogurt with live cultures than on some actual L. acidophilus bacteria culture. I think the sourdough comparison is pretty apt - think of that cup of Dannon as your starter. I don't remember if that episode of Good Eats explained where to get some actual L. acidophilus from.

Perhaps I should have said that the only sweetening was honey. I could have thrown in some blueberries, but that would just ruin the taste of perfectly good berries.

Actually, I think the beermaking process either kills off or deactivates all the yeast when it's finished. Probably a good thing too - if beer drinkers could make more beer from a single beer, I don't think we'd get anything done.

Actually, I think the beermaking process either kills off or deactivates all the yeast when it's finished. Probably a good thing too - if beer drinkers could make more beer from a single beer, I don't think we'd get anything done.
Yeah, the yeast used in fermentation processes dies when it reaches a certain alcohol content. There are different strains of yeast with higher tolerances, beer is lowest, then wine, then champagne which can take up to 20% alcohol tolerance.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

The alcohol level in beer is nowhere near high enough to kill the yeast. Most beers are filtered then pasteurised. I prefer my beer unpasteurised and unfiltered. So much better.
