PBG4 Battery Life

I have had my PBG4 667 for 8 months now.  2 Questions to all of you PB users:

Has your battery lost some of it's life?
Can you make it last longer?

I used to get a little more life out of mine.  I now get roughly 3 hours (2.5 when watching a DVD).  I usually keep it plugged in when in use.  I have heard that it is good to do so from some people and it is bad to do so from others.
roll

So usually once or twice per week, i run it on it's battery until it is about to die and then plug her in to recharge.  I even keep the display brightness notched down a bit when using battery power.

I definately don't get the full 5 hours that Apple says I should.

experiences? suggestions?

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

I think apple embellish a little when they made that statement.  I am new to the Mac world but I have been using PC laptop for a while I regularly would leave it plug in and it has not any adverse effect. Every once in a while I will usually leave it on battery power and let completely drain and recharge. It usually gives me about three hours or so depending on how much usage it gets while on battery

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

If I video edit...battery life will be 1 hr 45 min to 2 hr 30 minutes.

After six months of constant use my batteries still charge to 100% Sometimes they'll say 99% but who cares.

It is a Lithium Ion battery and you should not run it all the way down. Keeping any battery fully charged it optimum. Therefore leaving it plugged in should be anything but harmful.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

thanks.  I always get 100% charge as well (8 months of at least 5 days/week usage).  I guess I never thought about that.

I still get 45 minutes more time than the Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop i am forced to use at work.  that makes me feel a little better. wink

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

Has anyone had thier battery die?

I was somewhat rough on my battery (wasn't uncommon to charge/drain the battery twice in a day) but i was still shocked when it went from fully charged to not working in three seconds.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

I had a battery die on my Pismo about a year ago. It had been declining in runtime, but I had sort of chalked that up to runnning X most of the time. Then it just went out one night while I was using it on battery. Had enough juice to keep it asleep between home and work, but as soon as I opened it up - bam.

I got a replacement on eBay, which worked pretty good. It has lost some capacity recently.

I bet the 5 hours time is figured by turning everything possible off/down and letting it sit doing nothing. I am sure PCs do the same.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

Does anyone know if there is a non-Apple brand spare battery for the Powerbook G4? It's outrageous for Apple to charge $129 for one.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

You're complaining about $129? It's $149 for a new battery for my Pismo.

Try eBay - you might be able to snag one there.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

I am very pleased with the battery life on my G4 667.  With the screen dimmed fairly low, I can get a full 4 hours of average use out of it.  It would sit for 5 hours, I'm sure.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

I had mine replaced under AppleCare. I thought 45 minutes for a 1 year old battery was a little underperforming. If they would have refused to replace it, I would have purchased a new one. The key is that it took 30 minutes to charge the battery to 100% and 45 minutes to discharge.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

You know, i was just going to post my own topic about this.  Its really pissing me off how my battery has just started declining in usage time recently.

I used to (about a year ago when my PB 667 was new) get about 4 hours of life but this last week it's dropped to about 1 1/2 hours!  As school i usually use it plugged in all day long so i guess i wouldn't have noticed a gradual decline, however now that i'm home for Christmas break (yay!) I've been using more and more unplugged and am not a happy customer.

I'm sure its just my battery getting old and if i replaced it everything would be all good again...but DAMN it makes me mad that this wonderful machine is aging so quickly.  I mean I got it last October 2001 and it's already having this problem...
...so my question: If your battery is starting to age/die how old is it/was it when it started to die and how long can you go now?

I guess i'm going to have to save my money to buy yet another crappy apple battery... sad

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

One of the plusses of buying a new battery from Apple these days is that they are 61 watt-hours compared to the 52 or so that were in the previous generation Ti's (and I assume the previous generation had more than the generation before that... etc). If you have a Rev. B or C TiBook you can use the Rev. D batteries in them.

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

Well bought a brand new Ti 800 a few months back, when they had just come out, ran just fine on the batteries, although the most I ever got out of it was about 3 hours tops..
Sold it to a friend the week the 1Ghz came out and bought one of those.

Brand new battery in the 1Ghz lasted not even a month..
Pulled it out to work on some audio loops one weekend, and 0%.
No charging, no power, nada..
Power indicator on the bottom would just blink when you pressed the button, Mac OS X would recognize the battery, but wouldnt charge it..

Got it replaced in two days from Apple..
New one seems to be okay..
The friend I sold my brand new 800 too sent his battery in for the same reasons a couple days after me..
Thank god for Applecare, cause I surely couldnt afford to replace the battery once a month hehe..

As for the new one, runs about 2.5-3 hours or so with actual work going on..
My TiBook is used in my recording studio with Logic 5 and way too many external devices hooked up and powered by USB and Firewire..
Ive seen Quake 3 and Jedi Knight 2 take out the battery in under 2 hours though...

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

Once upon a time I stayed home with my ill son on a cold Jan. day in 2001.  I just happend to be able to watch Mr. Jobs keynote at MacWorld on TechTV.  He presented a new PowerBook that I ordered that evening.  3 weeks later it was in my hands.  Almost 2 years later my battery had deteriorated to about 15 minutes of life.  It has been deteriorating since late-summer 2002 (ie. 3 hrs.; 2hrs.; 1 hr.; etc.).  I just received a new 61 Watt hour battery and have had 4hrs. + of life with regular use during its first day (today).  I have a Rev. A 400 MHz PB and it takes longer for my old power supply to charge this new battery, but I am pleased to be truly portable again.  I was able to go around my school and set up new AirPort Base Stations with ease today.  I showed off my 125 student's Powerpoint presentations to each class, checked and recorded 375 assignments on PowerGrade, and watched my students do tutorials on the iBooks in my classroom via Remote Desktop!  I also posted this message, but I'm plugged in right now, I am charging up again:)!

Re: PBG4 Battery Life

I have a PB 1 ghz model and just wanted to let everyone know that there is a new charger unit.  The new one has 3 prongs (not 2 like the older models) and the adapter is 65W.  I did not notice the change at first when I upgraded from my PB 667.  It wasnt until I was talking to a guy at Apple Store that I was made aware of the change.  Nothing in the manual about it.

Make sure you use the new adapter unit if you have the newer 867 or 1gig hz models.  Sell your old surplus ones on ebay or use them for ibooks.
