Re: Just got the August issue...

I have to say I enjoy the rag more than ever. It seems to have matured along with me, and I love the glossy covers. When I got the July issues in the mail I spend 5 minutes rubbing the smooth cover against my face  big_smile

I too also wonder why the contests are void in Maryland ("The Old Line State")? Not that I'd have any winning entry but I'm sure yall are missing out on my great mediocreness  tongue

Re: Just got the August issue...

By the way, we got the results of our Reader Survey on Friday.

Rik, I've never sent in one of those Reader Survey forms because I can't bear to cut up my beloved MacAddict magazines.  BYTE magazine used to have tipped-in postcards where readers could vote for their favorite articles.  I think the cards were even postage-paid.

Now I wouldn't expct y'all to put in postage-paid cards, but you might get a better response if the readers didn't have to cut up the sacred pages themselves.

I think people will mistake them for subscription cards and throw them away.

Re: Just got the August issue...

If you put a cathcy pharse in big letters on the card like "SEX!!", people will read it and understand that it is a form to enter a contest. There, that solves the problem

Re: Just got the August issue...

The way I look at it, what's happening to the MacAddict staff is no different than what's happening to the rest of us - they're just plain getting older.

To illustrate my point, just look at the Beatles.  They used to be the hippest thing going among the young people of their generation.  Now, the survivors of that group are just a couple of old fuddy-duddys.  One of then even died of old age.

So, until the next happening Mac mag...

Re: Just got the August issue...

The one thing I miss from the mag is the wit! I kept on buying the mags even though I was running 7.0 on a LC 575! I didn't care if most of the stuff on the CD didn't work (why I missed some of the features in "on the disc") and all I could see was a bunch of PeeCee's were being dented, drowned and draged around the MA carpark! I mean I was still buying the mag when OS 9 came out! Only then did I buy a iMac and start back through the SW. I bought it for the MAG not the CD!

I bought the July mag today. There WAS more wit. No I have to wait another month for the August mag.  cry

Re: Just got the August issue...

My point is:

The Beatles got old,

their music got old,

and now the good folks at MacAddict - once a hip bunch - just plain
got old,

just like the contents of their once-hip mag.

So, until the next happening thing...

My point is:

I'm going to have to take issue with that one.  Sure, they got old.  It would have been bizarre if they didn't.  Their music, though?

Some of their music, the older stuff, got old.  I'm convinced, though, that you could play some of their music on modern rock radio stations (without announcing "the Beatles")  and a lot of teens listening would perk up and go "Hey, who is that?  They're good!"  They'd never realize that they were listening to stuff that was new when their parents/grandparents were young.

lol

I smurf you not, I was getting my hair cut the other day and the stylist was bopping around to some Zep.  I said nothing like some good Zeppelin. She agreed, asked how I'd heard of them.  When I told her I grew up on their music, I thought she was gonna have a coronary.

kids... tongue big_smile

(omigawd, I sound like my parents!!! eek )

But to stay On Topic (tm), I'll say that the mag certainly and expectedly has changed over the years since issue 1, in some ways for the better, in some for the not-so-much-better.  But not necessarily worse in my book.  After all, it's still about our beloved Macs (even if Apple as a company sucks and Jobs is a swaggering dictator with delusions of godhood  wink )

I'd like to see a little more of the old irreverance (sans profanity, please, it's supposed to be a family publication--yeah I know I cussed up there, but there are filters here that don't exist in a magazine except in the hands of the EDITOR--hint hint).

Re: Just got the August issue...

Someone mentioned "scaring off switchers." That's a good point. Back in 96 my Mom was buying her first computer capable of running a GUI (she's a bit behind). I tried to get her on the Mac. I was on the Mac EvangeList mailing list and I asked them for help (finding a few specialty software titles). I got so many replies that I just forwarded all of them to my Mom. Big mistake. I don't think she'll ever use a Mac now. She's afraid of the rapid weirdos who ranted against Windows as fervently as a revival preacher denounces the devil.

Despite all of that, I like edgy. smile

Re: Just got the August issue...

What's missing? Dave Reynolds. The guy used to write about half the magazine, and it was good stuff. Prison Guy was fun as well. There isn't anything quite as trippy as the iBorg in the mag these days.

But three cheers for Rik, you're doing a great job. Colonel Panic is inspired.
