Don't want to leave for Macworld, but....
I have been subscribing to MacAddict since 1998, and have greatly enjoyed every issue and every disc. Last year I picked up a TiBook, and since I was already getting MA, went for the free year of MacWorld. Although I prefer MA's more humorous approach to content, the Macworld feature on the Quark 6 beta helped me more in my job as a Mac Sys Admin for a newspaper. I was seriously considering not renewing my MA subscription - but then last month's feature on the 50 bugs (this time for OS X) helped a great deal. So I was filling out the renewal form yesterday, when I received an e-mail from Macworld to renew my subscription and get two years for $35! Compared to MA's $30 for one year, that's a heck of a deal.
I guess my question, and hopefully someone here at MA will be able to answer it is this - are there any plans to offer subscribers two years for the price of one any time soon? I've seen Electronic Gaming Monthly and others starting to do this, presumably as a way to keep subscribers. I don't want to leave, but I can't really afford both...

Re: Don't want to leave for Macworld, but....
my propsed solution is simple.
simply subscribe to your favorite of the two and purchase the other one at a newstand when they have an article or how to you need.
I read both and they counter balance each other lovlely, but I must admit I like MACADDICT A LOT MORE

Thank you for the suggestion Cleric. I guess that's what I'll do, since no one here want's to answer my question about two year subscriptions.
Thanks for the memories MA. See you on the other side (and in MiniThink :0)

giving up less than a day after posting your question is a little short sighted i think. but i think with ma you have the option for two years only when you first sign up.
also, macworld has many many times the distribution/money/power of macaddict, so they can pawn their magazine for pennies like that.

Why not get your employer to spring for your MW subscription; that's not at all uncommon. Then you can buy MA on your own if you want.

ick, macworld sucks. i mean, you know how when you go through MAD magazine, you skip some things, like i skip the movies the first time through, and go back and reread them later. with macworld, i have no will to read the articles i skip. the ones i read are only midly entertaining.
(this based back on when i read magazines). macaddict is the same as MAD...good reread value. macworld has ZERO reread value

I'm pretty sure you don't get a CD with the Macworld subscription, whereas you do with MA. If you do a search for MacAddict subscriptions, though, you'll find a non-disc subscription for about the same price as Macworld's two-year subscription. But you mentioned that you like the disc too, so...

Actually, I gave it two days - plus I spend most of my time in MiniThink, where you don't have to wait long for a response! I gave up after Rik had posted to some other thread and clearly wasn't going to respond to me.
In any case, I'm sure Macworld has more resources than MA, but is that supposed to influence my decision? While I like MA better, they are both useful to me

With Broadband at home and at work, the CD isn't critical to me anymore, so that might be a good compromise. I'll look into it.
Thanks Droo!

Actually, it's not much of a compromise. Droo is right... if you subscribe to MW, you don't get a CD. If you check out the August issue, on the bottom of page 81, you'll see the small print

Dude, cut me some slack.
I was sick a coupla days last week (hack, hack, hack...) and -- to be frank -- I don't know much about the circ stuff for the mag. I tend to spend my few coherent hours worried about content, not delivery. C'est la mag biz...
With any luck at all, I'll have a few nanoseconds next week to track down the answer to your question -- but with Cathy off on her honeymoon, Chris off working on a new launch by our parent company, and me playing both EIC and ExecEd, I make no promises.
So cool yer jets, sir. If you like Macworld better, subscribe to them. If you like MacAddict better, subscribe to us. If you'd prefer to pick 'n' choose, just buy off the newsstand -- which we'd prefer that you do, in any case, since our profit margins are better.
So be it.
For me, I'm back to editing our "Product Slugfest" feature for next month -- all the top Mac apps, head-to-head, plus tech stuff like DSL vs. cable, hubs vs. switches -- and far more important stuff, such as Star Wars vs. Star Trek, AL vs. NL, Rock vs. Country, etc.
Might be fun; might not -- your call -- but we're giving it our best shot.

Didn't mean to offend Rik - I was just trying to point out that you're getting ready to lose a 5 year subscriber, and someone who still has the 1st ever issue. As I said, I do like MA better, but the competition is offering a way better deal - I just wanted to know if there were any plans to offer subscribers two year subscriptions for the price of one.

Re: Don't want to leave for Macworld, but....
I have sadly come to the decision to let my MacAddict subscription run out. In fact I just received an issue without a cd saying that I was no longer a subscriber and that it would be my last MA. I too have been a subscriber since the start. I bought MacAddict 1 through 4 off the newstand and have had a subscription ever since. I still have every issue with its cd in a binder. I liked the mag that much. Unfortunately, over the last two years or so the magazines value to me has subsided greatly. I feel that there are a variety of factors contributing to this such as product reviews available online (which in my opinion are more accurate), up to the minute product release information available online, my dwindeling interest in Mac gaming, and a scarcity of meaningful how-to's. The only features that have been really interesting or valuable to me as of late have been the Pro interviews, but even those only go so far.
I have basically come to the realization that paying for a subscription to MA based primarily on my pride in having every issue and being there from the start doesn't make a lot of sense. There was a time when I would spend hours pouring over the pages of MacAddict. Now its surprising if I spend more that fifteen minutes flipping through the pages and seeing products I am not interested in and articles filled with information that has been available online for two weeks. Anyway, I don't really know if I even had a point with this post, but I wanted to throw in my opinion. If it is any consolation I am also letting my MacWorld subscription run out. I have been subscribing to them for four years.

From our customer service guru, Mike:
"Basically if someone wants a two-year ... it's 24 issues and 24 CDs for only $49.95. As for how they can get it ... they can either call 888-771-6222 or just subscribe on-line by clicking on Subscribe Now! on the home page of MacAddict.com"
For comparison, Macworld is $35 for two years, but with no CDs.

Re: Don't want to leave for Macworld, but....
Thanks for the info Rik! As I said, with access to broadband, the CD isn't critical to me anymore, but obviously there are a lot of people still using dial-up who need it.
IMHO, you should advertise the two year subscription option more, and maybe even sweeten the deal a bit - say $45 or $40 for the two years. Believe it or not, $15 makes all the difference - at least to me.
Thanks again, and I'm sure I'll be grabbing a few issues off the newsstand.

Re: Don't want to leave for Macworld, but....
I've been double dipping for the first time since somewhere in the 90s when I had both MacUser and MacWorld delivered to my home - and as was the case then, MacWorld is second fiddle. Although they do have Andy Ihnatko, I know which subscription I'll let run out.
