Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
Is anyone out there using Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/o … avindwx=s9 ?
I would like to hear how it works for you.
What I have is a Windows box running win2000, I use this machine only to tunnel into my works network so I can access network email and intranet sites. I work for a bank (from my home) so the tunnel they use is highly encrypted using 40 bit. (RaptorMobile) and they offer no mac product.
Ok, I know I could just use the winbox on the side (which I do now) and use my Powerbook G4 1GHZ for my real work, but what I would like to do is hook up an additional LCD monitor to my Powerbook and remotely access the PC (which I would like to put in the closet). That way I have just one machine, keyboard, mouse on my desk.
The reason I have wondering if these remote access is working for anyone is, I have only windows 2000 pro on my winbox and Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac requires Windows 2000 server, so before I purchase that I would like to hear some feedback.
Thanks.

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
I've used the Remote Desktop for our XP Pro system here at work. It seemed to work fairly well. However, most of our systems at work run NT ,98, and our servers are 2000 so I use RealVNC predominantly as my remote contol software of choice. It's platform independant and works fairly well in my opinion. I think with Windows remote desktop you are able to drag and drop files(vnc doesn't support that), but I didn't need that, so I didn't use it when I was testing it. I didn't like the way remote desktop had fixed screen resoloution and graphic limitations. I assume they did it for speed, but VNC was still faster, especially with the latest release.

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
Thanks for the information, too bad they dont make RealVNC for Mac OS X.
It is available for OSX. Real VNC is open source and has released the source code for those who want to port it. There are about three ports that I have downloaded and used on OS X. Unfortunately I can't recall the name here at work. If you go to "Get Mac OS X Software" or some place like Tucows.com and search for VNC you will find both the server and viewer application ports. There is one that is in my mind a better port, but you'll have to wait until I get home for the name of it. Sorry.

Do a search for VNCThing, osxvnc, or vncdimension.
You'll want the latest "Real VNC" for your PC client/server though. It appears to be quicker than previous versions.

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
I installed RealVNC on my Win2000 machine and VNCThing on my Mac OS X.
But I have not yet been able to connect. When I choose "open a new session" on the Mac and input the IP address of the Win2000, it comes back with "the server could not be found".
Both these machines are on a LAN, sharing an internet connect via a ethernet routher. Do I need a seperate IP addresses from my ISP to make this work?
thanks, Paul

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
You ought to be able to connect using the computer name in DHCP enviroment(in two client eviroment your ip should be one different than the other,I think). Once you install the RealVNC on the 2000 machine you have to set a password when you start the VNC Server. I would also tell it to start as a service when the machine boots. In the Start menu, programs,RealVNC, VNC Server, select "Register VNC Service". This will allow you to access it before you login.

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
OK, I was able to connect to the win2000 VNC from the Mac.
But when I try to launch a tunnel to my work network via RaptorMobile,
the connection freezes up. There most be something built into that to prevent VNC from working.
Oh well... looks like I will just have to use the Win2000 machine by itself and have two keyboards and two mice and 3 monitors.
Thanks for all your info, it was very helpful

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
I don't know much about RaptorMobile, but could you just run it on the Mac under Virtual PC and get rid of the PC all together?
If you are still looking at using Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac to connect and control the PC, wouldn't moving the PC to Windows XP Professional be more cost effective and simpler than moving to Windows 2000 Server?
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac
Yes, that would be very nice if I could run RaptorMobile under OS X, but the tunnel software is the only one used my employer (Wells Fargo) and they only support 95,98, 2000 and are in beta testing for XP.
My partner is buying a new PC with XP Pro, so when he gets that and if they come out with production RaptorMobile (also called TREK)for XP I can test Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac while running the tunnel on the XP.
Thanks for the exchanges, this is a learning experience for me,
