OS X volume bug

I tried searching the forum for this because surely it's happened to someone else, but my search turned up nothing useful.

Everytime my Mac goes to sleep (and I notice sometimes if the screen saver is running for a while) my system volume will become almost mute. A few times it's gone competely mute. This started happening after I reinstalled Jaguar on my Mac a few months ago and I haven't been able to figure out why. I can just turn the volume back up again, but as soon as it falls asleep...

400Mhz G4 Sawtooth
512MB RAM
OS X 10.2.6
64MB nVidia Geforce3

Thanks for any help!

Resetting the PRAM was uneffective. The problem still remains. I just have regular audio speakers, nothing special.

Re: OS X volume bug

A few dumb questions.  Have you tried the speakers with a sound source aside from the mac?  that is, is the volume on the speakers getting low or is it the mac volume that's going down?  What screen saver are you running.  It's plausible that the screen saver is turning down the volume. Do you have a keyboard control for volume that might be getting hit?  Is it possible that you have roommates/friends/coworkers that might be turning the volume down for their own reasons?

As I said, this started happening a few weeks after I reinstalled Jaguar. I have used the same speakers for quite sometime, so it's definitely the Mac system volume. I will try changing my screen saver to a default, but the screen saver I am using has no sound to begin with. I have to use the keyboard control to turn back up the volume after this glitch happens. And the roommates/friends thing is a definite no.
