Just curious, where did you serve?
I think he's talking about his action at the battle of the Argonne Forest.
I still believe in liberalism today as much as I ever did, but, oh, there was a happy time when I believed in liberals.

Don't you mean The Battle of Lexington? Or was it Concord?

they still didnt deserve that
but they had to have more security. after almost ten years of sanctions and with the big mess the country is in right now, they had to know that most people could rebel, and that the huge number protests were a sign that the iraqi people are getting relentless against anything western now...
....although their work there was purely humanitarian and Sergio Vieira de Mello was the type of person that went out to the streets and talked with people. truth is that the UN facilities were poorly guarded compared to other military or administration buildings.

Re: UN Headquarters in Iraq attacked by suicide bomber. Why?
6. Deaths caused by terrorism still do not compare to the number of Americans killed by drunk driving. 17,419 people died from alcohol-related accidents this year alone, compared to the less than 4000 Americans who have ever been killed by terrorist acts. Why is war our priority?
And if we are to believe the results of one study I vaguely recall, another 10,000 to 13,000 were probably killed by people driving under the influence of cell phones. You can probably add another 4,000-5,000 by folks that just plain ol' lost control of their vehicle or weren't paying attention.....
eeek! That's like 31,000-ish.
But the UN bomb thingee was a target of opportunity. It goes to show how much progress we've made with our war on terrorism. Truly. We have not only brought an end to the Hussein regime, but we have brought it's people terrorist bombings. I'm proud.
...and watch out for the flying meat!

Re: UN Headquarters in Iraq attacked by suicide bomber. Why?
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan vowed Wednesday that the world body "will not be intimidated."
at least they're not pulling out like i'm sure a lot of other people are wanting them to now.
what gets me is the same people that are saying "get our boys out of there now" are the ones that condem the actions of us leaving too soon in the gulf war when saddam came back and plowed over those who rose up against him. damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Unless you don't do it in the first place.

I'm guessing they didn't have much security because they didn't expect to be targeted. I can't think of a time when UN personnel have been so endangered. The last occasion I can think of was Rwanda, when a platoon of UN peacekeepers was slaughtered by Hutu fanatics. But certainly UN aid workers are generally out of the fray.
The thing is, the UN really was there to help, and Mello really was committed to ending the occupation and getting Iraq back on its feet. But just as the rebels are blowing up the country's infrastructure, they're also trying to damage teh UN's efforts. I guess by plunging the country into chaos they can gain enough support to throw the 'cans out.

well I've just learned from a recent interview Sergio gave to a brazilian newspaper where he said that the low security was a personal request, because he wanted to give the idea that they were there to help and that they were not a threat to the iraqi people...

Re: UN Headquarters in Iraq attacked by suicide bomber. Why?
Back to the original question ...
Robert Fisk explains it well in his essay Who Wants to go to Iraq Now?
"...For it proves that no foreign organization -- no NGO, no humanitarian organization, no investor, no businessman -- can expect to be safe under the United States' occupation rule. The U.S. proconsul, L. Paul Bremer, was supposed to be an "anti-terrorism" expert. Yet since he arrived in Iraq, he has seen more "terrorism" than he can have dreamed of in his worst nightmares -- and has been able to do nothing about it. Pipeline sabotage, electricity sabotage, water sabotage, attacks on U.S. troops and British troops and Iraqi policemen and now the bombing of the United Nations ... what comes next? Americans can reconstruct the dead faces of Saddam's two sons but they can't reconstruct Iraq. ..."

Fisk may have a zillion phd's but he comes off a
here.
The major problem here is anarchy.
America can't go protecting the Iraqis forever. They need to set up a government like------- yesterday.

I won't hold my breath.
We'll we might get rid of those 'weapons,' but I'd be lying if I said that I didn't believe this whole campaign will come back to bite us in the ass at some point down the road...

Re: UN Headquarters in Iraq attacked by suicide bomber. Why?
Well, things might be unraveling...
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/22/inter … ner=GOOGLE
""We believe the U.N.'s security was seriously compromised," the official said, adding that "we have serious concerns about the placement of the vehicle" and the timing of the attack. The bomb exploded directly under the third-floor office of the United Nations coordinator for Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, while he was meeting with a prominent American human rights advocate, Arthur C. Helton. Both men were killed, along with several top aides to Mr. Vieira de Mello."
