New PowerBooks - My Thoughts

I'm going to be somewhat critical in this post (which is the point!) but keep in mind that I am searching here, and I actually would love to own any of these new models.

The ads are great!  Jeff served us well once again!

12" PowerBook
------------------
For this much money, I want Airport Extreme built-in, not just ready.
Also, 1024x768 is a terrible resolution, but on 12", what more can we expect?  Nice, if all you want to do is e-mail and instant messaging.  But why wouldn't you just get an iBook in this case?  Isn't the G4 a bit of a waste?

FireWire 800 should be on this model.  We need to promote our new standard!  Having only one model with FireWire 800 is going to seriously hurt the growth of it in the next few months.

I would own one of these in a heartbeat, but won't pay the money for one right now... without FireWire 800, this thing is sure to be outdated in no time.

15.2" PowerBook
--------------------
Okay, so Apple way over-stocked.  The price drops are nice, but shouldn't they go ahead and release some new 15.2" models?  The 12" models are BETTER.  How much sense does this make?  And anyway, for most users, 12" is too small but 17" is entirely too big.  The 15.2 needed to be upgraded... it was the only model that needed upgrading.  Apple blew it on this one, and IMO it is their only totally moronic decision today.

17" PowerBook
------------------
Great Price!  But this thing is WAY too big for most folks.  It looks like a clown's shoe.

I'll keep my 15.2" 667 G4 and wait for the next revision of 15.2" PowerBooks.  :-)

I wanted FireWire 800, but I'm not going to put up with 17" of aluminum taking up my entire desk to get it.

*Don't flame me -- just giving my honest opinions here -- and notice I mentioned that I would still love to have one of these new PowerBooks -- I just won't pay for it with MY hard-earned money*  :-)

Re: New PowerBooks - My Thoughts

It seems Apple isnt trying to push FireWire 800 right now, it is just accomodating its high end users.

As for the 12" iBook and PowerBook similarities, its just outward appearance. (Don't judge a book by its cover!)

- SuperDrive, Dual Display, G4, DDR Memory, S Video, Bluetooth, Airport Extreme Ready, etc.

To say this computer is just for Email and Instant Messaging is JOKE!, you can do everything with this that you can do with a high end G4 tower!

I think the 17" is fantastic though I wish they would have shoved a 1.25GHz chip in there.... cool

a bit too expensive but it is there for the high end studios. big_smile

Re: New PowerBooks - My Thoughts

I agree that the PB 15 incher is the sweet spot of the line.  It's the best all-round machine I can think of--good power, good screen size and res, but at 5.4 pounds, not too hard on your shoulder (ie, in a bag). Had the 17" model been more like 6.2 pounds, I would have gone for it, but 6.8 is too heavy for all the walking I do to and from studios, cafes, etc.

I'll buy a new PB to replace my 800DVI when they revise the 15" model with the new form factor, and add Bluetooth/Airport Extreme. Then I'm there...

Re: New PowerBooks - My Thoughts

0.6 pounds is that much of a problem? I would tend to say all the extra stuff more than makes up for a laptop that is still lighter than alot out there.

So long,
Larg0

ps. Alienware has a amoking fast laptop (still not as useful and awesome as the new PowerBook) that is 9.6 pounds! It doesn't have DVD-r or any of that cool stuff.
