PM 8500
Greetings all,
A few months ago I picked up a PM 8500 with a 604 150, 128mb's of ram, a 1.2 and 2.0gb hd and internal 4x scsi cdrom.
I have since upped it to a 200mhz 604e, 176 mb's ram, external 4gb hd external zip, ati mach64 with 6mb an apple 15"av monitor (the one with speakers on the sides) and an apple 17" monitor (this one has what appears to be an ADB hub on it's base for connecting the kb and mouse to). I also upped the onboard vid ram from 2 to 4mb. I also got a plaintalk mic.
When I was running the 604/150 system profiler (in both 9.1 and 10.1.5) said the machine was a pm8500. When I slapped the 604e/200 in it, the machine is listed as a pm8600. Weird.
In 9.1 the floppy drive works fine. I put disk in and it shows up on the desktop. In 10.1.5 it does not. Any idea's?
I gotta say I love the box. Dual monitors are so much more productive than the single monitor on my athlon box.
I must say that as someone with an open mind who switched platforms, coming to MacOS is like coming home. It works the way I expect it to and does not bother me with a million and one stupid questions. Yes I want to empty the trash, yeas I want to autosave (pick an app). Windows is nice for some things (Master of Orion). But otherwise I'll take MacOS.
Also I love OS X and 9. Was there ever a version of 10 or 9 that had the Unix core but with 9's gui? I like being able to reduce to a title bar (a'la windowshade) but hate having to load an extra app in it for 10 when it was built into 9.
Well that's it for now. I love this box. Anyone wnat an Athlon?
Edited:
I love the hardware, hate the damned case!
Is it possible to mount this sucker in the 8600 case I picked up off e-bay for $20? Will the PS match up between the two cases? If so then that would be cool. I have an extra 256mb of ram I want to add but I hate opening the case.

That would be because OS X does not feature support for floppy drives.

Re: PM 8500
Would that be like OS X is not supported on my machine? X post facto took care of that little problem. So I was wondering if anyone had heard of some crazy guy figuring out a way to get support for the floppy drive to work in OS X.
About the 8600 case and power supply question, does anyone here have an idea about that? Is it possible? This is the only mac I have and would like to keep it in the best enclosure possible. I have years of hardware experience so it's not like I'm worried about hrting the mobo or anything. I just wnat to make sure the thing will mount in there before I go through all of the frustration of removing the mobo. ps, cables, and drives only to find out that on hole is off by 1'32 of an inch or something stupid like that.

No, it's not because OS X isn't supported by your machine, it's because OS X is software, and it doesn't have a floppy disk driver. OS X in it's basic, unadultered form can't use a floppy drive any more than Windows XP could run on a NeXT Cube.
That said, there is a floppy driver available - you should be able to find it linked to from the home page for XPostFacto. I have downloaded it, but haven't tried getting it to work yet (I'm kind of in the same boat as you with my 7300.)
Best of luck.

I have a PowerMac 8500 as well. I haven't done any upgrading to it (132mhz, 64MB of ram) other than a HD, the case is a pain to work with. Ahh the beauty of a nearly 10 year old case, back when they didn't have to make cases the consumer could get into

What a lovely case it is too. I like the look of it, but I want to re-mount everything in this 8600 case I have. Other than the quicksilver case, I think this is one of apple's best designed cases.
