opinions on panther

i hope apple doesn't sham us out of another $80 for another point update... i'm not quite sure if i'll buy panther if it costs above $60... i've used the preview of panther and its glitchy (will definately be fixed, though), and all of the new features arent very head-turning...

Re: opinions on panther

While that would be nice, and say, considerate of its customer's finances, don't count on it.  Apple likes cash when it can get it, so its not likely to waste a good opportunity to get a lot of it.

Re: opinions on panther

How are they to do upgrades like that, though (ie make sure that you actually bought 10.2)?
They have no serial numbers so they can't do it that way.
They could make sure you have already installed OSX like they did in 10.1.  But then that would be really annoying, because a clean install would be harder to do.
Seriously, though, who will be buying 10.3 other than those who already have a copy of OSX?  A few holdouts with G3s?  Those running print shops that use Quark? I think that those people will be a minority among those buying 10.3.

Re: opinions on panther

When you bought 10.2, you probably got 3 upgrade certificates.  You pay full price for it, turn in an upgrade certificate, and get a rebate from Apple (or sometimes Mac-specific stores will take the certificate and instantly give you the rebate).

Re: opinions on panther

I was at the Expo today.  I got to see Panther and spoke with the Apple reps about it.  They are still not telling us when it will be released-the official answer is "later this year."  The rep said it will probably cost $120 to buy it off the shelf.  They are discussing a possible upgrade discount and incentives for recently bought computers shipping with 10.2.

Re: opinions on panther

I installed the Panther beta, just to have a look.

And it made me MORE LIKELY to buy the upgrade.  Panther is fantastic (minus the bugs that are inherent in a beta OS).

Re: opinions on panther

10.1 to 10.2 to 10.3 may be point versions, but they are not "just point upgrades".  They are much like 7.0 to 7.5 to 7.6 to 8.0 to 8.5 to 9.0 to 10.0.  Each of these was released on a 10-15 month cycle, and all were paid - $99 - upgrades (except 9 to 10).  So Apple skipped .5s before X, and are going .1s with each paid X release.  This is partly because they want to use the "X" for "10" as long as possible.  Also, Jaguar and Panther have been "named" publicly because Apple wants people to realize that these are not just bug fix releases.  These are major feature releases, and are being charged for.
10.1 was an exception.  It was enough of a change to require a point change, but it was also primarily a bug fix release, so was given away.  Jobs has already said that Panther will be $129.
Whoever thinks that Phil Schiller said that the odd releases will be free when 10.1 was announced/shipped is wrong.  What he probably said was "every other release will be paid".  Which means every one other than this one [10.1] will be paid.

Re: opinions on panther

eek

Are you kidding, Panther (7B39) screams on a iMac 500, and your ibook 700 is way faster.  Jaguar is slow in comparison to panther.

I have seen this, its real.  Be patient, and when it is released you will be amazed with your ibook 700.  I also have a ibook 700 and your machine is fine.

Re: opinions on panther

I just hope these stupid upgrade certificates aren't going to be in my box of 10.3.  Why keep shipping your OS with them if you're never going to let your customers use them?  mad   Maybe if Apple stops printing off all those coupons, the cost of boxing will go down and be reflected in the price.  big_smile

I agree. They're next to useless. I have never used a single one in the 5 years that i've been collecting 'em.

Re: opinions on panther

i always thought that those coupons were for weird people who don't have an internet connection and can't download updates ex.10.2.5 so they don't pay an even more rediculus $20 update CD. this seems rediculus now since everyone and their grandmother has an internet connection.

Re: opinions on panther

If it makes anyone feel better, if MS released the kind of upgrade 10.1-10.2 or 10.2-10.3, they wouldn't call it mearly an upgrade, they would call it an whole new OS (like they did with XP, though they did add alot of pointless eyecandy features).  At least Apple is being honest and calling them upgrades, not compleatly new OS's.

how or where is it legal to obtain a copy of beta, or is it wrong.
if it is, then why is it even out on the web?

No, it's not supposed to be a public beta. So yes, it is technically wrong.

As for your next question...  lol Take a look around the web sometime. You can get practically anything, legal or not. Why? shrug
