Moe Syzlak

I was watching "The Simpson's" last night and something occurred to me. As depressed and suicidal as Moe is, he never turns to alcohol as a solution.  In fact, I don't think I have ever seen Moe drink.

I just wanted to point out the irony.

(and in case you are "simpson clueless", Moe is a bartender.)

Re: Moe Syzlak

This Simpsons are great too, no matter what hard times the family goes through, they always stick together... the catholic priest like it because it shows strong family values, after all they've been though they end up together still married in the end.

Moe sounds like a good guy though, never seen him drink your right. Good observation.

Another plus for the Catholic Priests is that Bart and Lisa are often out of shouting range of an adult.

That's a really good point, shoeman. Weird. I can't recall ever seeing him drink either.

Wow, that is a really excellent point.  Once again, the Simpsons proves to be deeper than I ever could have imagined.

None really, it was a personal story about a priest that I knew that made a comment about the Simpsons... nothing to do with general religion.

Re: Moe Syzlak

Moe is a very complex character.  He obviously is a loser and has many problems, yet he doesn't turn to alcohol for comfort.  Why is this?  Perhaps he sees the effects that it has on the lives of his friends, and realizes that he is better off.  The very fact that Moe, who is a bar tender, never drinks is clearly not a coincidence, but instead a conscious decision from the show's creators.

Hmmm... are you aware that your atheism is more of a religion to you than most people's religion?

Actually, there was a book written about the Simpsons and how religion plays a largely positive role in the show. Supposed to be a good, non-preachy read, although I haven't picked it up myself.

Actually, it's much too preachy to be readable. I prefer The Simpsons and Philosophy. The Simpsons is a much deeper show than most people give it credit for. They see one episode, think it's idiotic and hateful, and trash the show at every opportunity they get. Most of them don't even watch one episode. A lot of these people are religious nuts, though, so maybe it's better that they don't soil the show image.

Re: Moe Syzlak

shoeman this is an excellent observation. I bet Moe used to be a raging alcoholic, with the telltale signs of his miserable failures in his love life, so what my theory is that he hit rock bottom and turned stone cold sober. No more drinking for him. You will notice a lot of bartenders around this area anyway don't drink at all. I bet it's because they see what poop-shooters people make of themselves when they are toasted.

It means that what he's doing is taking is "belief" so lighthearted that he must be an idiot that hasn't studied anything else, or even the dogma behind what he believes.

Yeah, if I spent my days watching Barney, Homer, Lenny and Karl then I'd probably swear off the sauce, too.

A: I've had real Christianity forced down my throat since I was 5. Studied seriously Islam, Buddism and Hinduism ; I don't always see religion as a psychological disease. Most of the time I see it as a defence mechanism.

B: Dogma? Of course, some of us have independant beliefs.

wow, this reminds me of english class....
do you think the creators really thought out all these characters, and all their deepness? or do you think it's just an afterthought/coincidence......
like in books..."hemmingway uses a similie here" blah blah bullsmurf, it was just him writing, and it came out rockin good.
