That big new powerbook...

It's neat and all, but I think the little dinky keyboard is lost in a huge sea of dead space and it looks, well, it looks kinda silly.  If I didn't see it for real at the keynote, I'd say that it looked disturbingly like a bad fanboy photoshop job, rather than a piece of sturdy Apple industrial design.

I think they should have ditched that dead space and stuck a bigger keyboard in there - Y'know - with a Cursor cluster and/or numeric.  I know they want to keep consitancy/the same parts between the whole range, but it just looks so lost there in the middle of all that space...

I know the dead space I describe is probably taken up with the audio speaker gubbins either side, but I think a little more designery should have gone into this one.

  Um, what do you think?

  17" is neat, though.  What next?  19"?  22"  23"???

Re: That big new powerbook...

I agree. They could fit a Pro Keyboard into that much width... (just!)

Re: That big new powerbook...

Though I think they could have made a bigger keyboard, people need to remember, that this book is only 15.4" wide.  The screen is 17" on its diagonal.

A Pro Keyboard which measures about 17" would not fit.

Re: That big new powerbook...

People should also remember that if they put a larger keyboard on it, they would have had to design and produce two different sized keyboards between the 12 and 17 inch models. This would have raised productions costs.

I would like to pay more per unit to get a full featured keyboard.
Not full size, but full featured (like with a numeric keypad) just in powerbook size.

Aren't the keyboards different anyway?  The 17 is lighted, the 12 isn't.

Yeah, I don't think the 12" has a lighted Keyboard.  Maybe the lights aren't IN the keyboard, but UNDER it.  Maybe its the same keyboard, but with a light under it in the 17" model.

Maybe it will grow on me...

Good point, I didn't think of that.  If they are the same keyboard, how long until someone hacks a twelver to light up?  I'd like that because the 17" AlBook looks all out of proportion, not to mention I just like the smaller machine...

Re: That big new powerbook...

Don't get me wrong, I think the 17" looks awesome, but does anyone else think that the laptops are getting too big to be considered laptops? I mean, I have enough trouble lugging my 15" powerbook around, I can only imagine how large a 17" would be.

Re: That big new powerbook...

This showed me some things that Apple is finally aware of. When the first TiBooks came out two years ago, they were beautiful. But there were many things they lacked. They couldn't burn CDs, Couldnt burn DVDs, had only an 8 meg video card, and a 20 gig hard drive.

A few users on here including VideoArtGuy and myself rallied for a more robust laptop. We didn't even want a desktop machine. When you think about it, there is no use for one. If you can build a laptop with a bleeding edge video card, a ton of memory, and a fast chip, this would lay the ground work to put a portable on your desk. With Firewire and USB, adding drives is no problem. You can add the DVD burner, a 250 gig hard drive (or daisy chain of them for that matter). You can have the mouse and full size keyboard on your desk and hook the laptop to any massive display.

Apple got the hint. They have created some amazing laptops that dont comprimise anything to the user. These machines can now play any game on the shelf about as well as the desktops can. They can burn DVDs, CDs, ect. They have 802.11g, Gigabit Ethernet and Blue Tooth to handle the networking side of the house. They sport 60 gig internal harddrives and have 800 meg firewire to add your other harddrives. And now they even have a model with a 17 inch built in display...for those users who do music production and video production while on the go.

I can see why Apple is envisioning portables taking up half or more of their market share. The big picture concept is for Apple to provide your digital lifestyle using a digital hub. If this is really going to come to fruition, wouldn't you want to take that digital lifestyle with you everywhere you go? I sure as hell do. I have a desktop machine that is gathering dust. And its because I use the 1ghz powerbook for everything I do. I can do anything with it. I compromise nothing, and everywhere I go I know I have all my stuff with me.

After seeing these latest Powerbooks, I see that Apple gets it.

(Me): "Give me everything, I want to compromise nothing, and I want to take it everywhere."
(Apple): "Granted"

Re: That big new powerbook...

The 17" AlumiBook has speakers on either side of the keyboard... much larger than the speakers in the 15" model... smile

If they were to put a full size keyboard in that thing, it just wouldnt work... you would be completely off center... the ergonomics would be completely out of wack... smile

Re: That big new powerbook...

I understand about the digital lifestyle and no need for desktop stuff, about this laptop can do anything you want a apple desktop do but now you can take it with you!

But speaking for myself, $3499 is still a huge amount of money for a laptop/personal computer in yr 2003! I know people is going to say about blah blah BMW etc, but lets face it, in 5 yrs, that BMW will still be pretty usable in term of comfort/speed and probably have about 50% value left! Have you try to price a 5 yrs old computer(any kind) and see if you can get 10% value selling it? or how well it might perform with the modern software?

I say, Apple! lower the price! become a everyman computer company! be our friend! don't try to squeeze every penny off each computer, instead sell more at lower profit!

Re: That big new powerbook...

I believe that is what the 12" unit is designed to fulfill. At 1799.00 you get the G4 with a 40 gig and a combo drive. And for 1999.00 you have a portable with a G4, 40 gig, and a Superdrive. Think about that for a minute.

You can have your digital lifestyle, no comprimises (video card is a 32 meg GeForce 420 Go) and burn DVDs. The unit will still give you the firewire/blue tooth/usb/gig ethernet/wireless 802.11g.

For 1999.00

Try to find THAT on the PC side of the house. And lets not forget that to get the 15.2" screen, you can ante up 2799.00 as of this morning and get the 1Ghz machine with the Superdrive.

As a side note, Apple doesnt have anything in the lineup for 3499.00
The 17" is 3299.00

And Dell charges that for the 8300 Inspiron when its fully loaded with a 15" and not the 17", and it doesnt have the DVD burning or 802.11g capabilities either.

Apple has a pro laptop that starts at 1799.00 and tops out at 3299.00

Sounds like theres something for all pros in there.

Just a little nitpicky, but the twelver doesn't have gig ethernet.  Nor does it have Firewire 800.

Not quite the cutting edge specs as the 17" PowerBook.

I still want one...

Re: That big new powerbook...

Yeah.  I'm a mobile Pro Audio guy and while my current 800 tibook is more than enough, maybe I'll be tempted by that 17" down the road.  There isn't a PC around that Runs PT, DP or Logic like the Mac.  Actually, Digidesign only just recently got around to making a PC version of Pro-tools, which is a high latency joke at best.  Digital performer never has been on a PC and never will be.  Emagic is now owned by Apple, so no more Logic for the PC, ever.  Mac Powerbook is THE choice for mobile Pro Audio, no two ways about it.

Nor do it's key light up and it doesn't have a PCMCIA slot and it doesn't have this or that either. sad

That is one of the best commercials - at least it made my Mom laugh, and she wouldn't know a computer from a toaster but she asked about the PowerBooks - which means Apple won't put it on TV where the non-Apple freaks will see it sad

Re: That big new powerbook...

Something I haven't seen anybody mention... the screen resolution.

1.6 screen ratio on the 17", slightly wider ratio than the 15"...
