Using an iMac Software Install CD on a PowerBook 3400c
Hi there... first time posting...
Now, I've got a PowerBook 3400c laptop, which I got used, so no disks and a half baked install of OS 8.6. So... I'm wondering... is there anyway to install the iMac CD's OS 9.0.4 on it? I did everything the readmes said and it said "Cannot install software on this computer' or something to that effect. Even after trying it after booting the cd and even loading the cd and running it from 8.6.
Do I need to do a complete wipe of all system software first to install the version of OS 9.0.4 from the iMac CD, or will it just not work because this is not an iMac? Or is there some work around I could do to kinda trick it into thinking this is an iMac.
I checked the apple site and it said this model can do up to OS 9.1, so I see no reason why an 9.0.4 won't work on it, regardless of it's an iMac Software install CD.
All the other software on it works, so I know it's not the disk...
Is there a way of doing it? Or am I S.O.L with this disk and need to buy a pure OS 9 CD?
Thanks in advance for any help!

It should work, as I have had success with similar but not exactly the same circumstances.
Make sure you have the latest firmware updates for the PowerBook, or otherwise, Apple basterdized the CD, and it will only work with your iMac.
There used to be hacks available where you could change the machine ID to fool these kinds of CDs, but I think that vanished with the invention of Open Firmware.

A lot of people will be switching a Jaguar-only scheme. So, it shouldn't be toooo hard to find a normal installer OS 9 for cheap or even free.

On the iMac CD there should be a folder called Configurations inside is a disk image. If you mount the disk it will have a pristine system folder. Rename the system folder on the 3400 to old system folder. Copy the New system folder to the 3400. Now on the old system folder open it up and put the finder into the fonts folder. Now open and close the new system folder. This is now the blessed folder, reboot and it should be OS 9, then just transfer the files. Needless to say back up stuff first just in case.
