They cured my ibook! (almost)
I am sitting here with my trusty iBook 600 combo, new trim around the screen, new battery, new (faster) combo drive. AND the lid now closes correctly, no horrible squeeks.
If you live within 200 miles of Portland OR, it is worth the drive to take your problem macs to this place: Macshop Northwest, www.macshop.com
Over the years I've taken them a number of dead macs, including a 5300 in pieces, in a shoebox, and the have repaired them. They have never made me feel like an idiot, never laughed at me for dropping a $3000 laptop, and have reasonable prices.
Why the plug?
Because I've been screwed at EVERY other computer shop where I purchased a Mac or got it repaired.
My iBook buying experience was not so good. I bought it from another Portland OR Apple store. I got a good deal on the iBook, but they more than made it back on the little items I needed to get going. (Never buy when you are in a hurry)
When the cap pulled off my powercord my Apple reseller glued in back on with superglue. Then my powersupply failed in a flurry of sparks they said bring it in. When my wife got there they said, oops that was more than 14 days. Sorry, no returns.
But, they offered to deal with Apple for her and get me a new one for ONLY $50 or sell her a new "Yo, Yo powersupply" for $85.
So when she took the bait and came home with the wrong powersupply, I looked at the box and it turned out to be the little white iBook. Grrrrr. It was actually the correct one. Were they stupid or trying to rip us off?
Then the long series of phone calls. No help on the creaky screen, the sticking trackpad clicker, the 50 percent failure rate on CDs....
(Apple did send me a new powercord)
ANYWAY
I was in the Macshop last month with my brother picking up the trusty but slightly fragile old PowerBook 1400 and I mentioned my irritation with my iBook.
The fellow says, well all these problems are covered by your Apple Protection Plan. If you don't want to call Apple we will send it in for you.
I said, don't you charge? He looked at me kind of funny and said, we are an authorized Apple service center, why would we charge you?
I said, will they fix problems that are hard to duplicate like the CD burner failure rate, the sticking CD door or cosmetic problems? He says well we will call them for you if there are any problems. Sometimes it goes better if we deal with Apple for you!!!! WOW! Customer service!!!!!!!
So I brought it in with a list of problems and they sent it to Apple.
Not everything was repaired. My power connecter doesn't change color and the trackpad button still has a worn place from the screen hitting it.
The Macshop offered to repack it and send it back but I need it for a week. Then I'm sending it back.
I got a new combo drive! Now I can burn at 8x instead of 4x! whooooooooooooo! whooooo!
