Ok, so I'm building a pc....
I am building myself an athlon xp 2100 system.. I have all the parts but i am curious about one thing...I bought the retail cpu and I was wondering what the steps will be to get the cpu/heatsink/fan all onto the mobo correctly.

Step 1: If tyhekit didn't come with one, buy a CPU shim from Directron.com. They're $4 and it's a safety net.
Step 2: Put the CPU into the motherboard (this is easy)
Step 3: put theshim overit and slap on a thin film of thermal grease.
Step 4: Assemble the heatsink/fan combo seperately
Step 5: Figure out which way to orient the HSF, put it down, and clip it on. You may need to use a bit of pressure to do this, hence the shim. If it doesn't look like it will fit, it probably won't - think back to your topddler years spentwith plastic blocks and their corresponding holes.

You did get some Arctic Silver 3 thermal paste right? 
If I were you, I would have gotten the processor as OEM (without HSF), and gotten a more robust heat sink and fan combo... but its all said and done... good luck!

If you'er not goig to overclock, there's really no point to spending another $30 on a retail HSF, is there?
That said, I spent $60 on my third-party HSF. I'm a sucker.
