Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

on apple.com the main page has the new kb and mouse

well it says "powered by bluetooth"

isnt it powered by AA bateries and connected by bluetooth

hmmm apple get your wording right

Different meaning of the word. "Powered by Intel P4", the P4 doesn't provide the juice, the wall outlet does.

its not bluetooths slogen or anything i just think "connected by bluetooth" sounds better and creates less confusion i could imagine a switcher or newbie seeing that ad and thinking it will never need batteries then later finding out it wasnt like that

I'd be more worried about a newbie because a switcher should know better. Slogans or not language like that is all over the place in advertising/marketing let alone in the computer field. If you don't understand the vernacular, learn it.

ahhhh your giving windows users way to much credit

i would bet 90 percent of them dont know what BT is

My Logitch MX500 offers 7 buttons and a scrollie... which would you pick? Hot damn.

How much is that again?

I seen that one around for 49.99 with a cord

I'm not flaming apple. They make a design choice and stick to it. Their users like it and it works, so hey, more power to them. I just ordered my first ibook and am looking forward to using it sans mouse but this does not change FACTS.

How am I a troll? I guess if I am not a raging apple fanboy* I'm a troll?

I pointed out a (what i consider) a minor flaw in their system and the fact that they choose to leave it this way because they don't view it is a flaw.
I'm still quite excited about my new ibook and twistedguy at least has some reasonable grounds to argue his point without just flaming someone mindlessly.

I thought it was interesting...I just looked at the specs for the keyboard/mouse. The keyboard uses 4 alkaline batteries while the mouse uses Lithium batteries...

um why?

First off, Apple should make them run on NiMH batts, not alkaline. Lithium? Probably because they are lighter and have a higher capacity than alkaline, but they are more expensive.

Well, as long as you get the same size and voltage, alkaline and NiMH batteries are completely interchangeable.  In fact, though they cost a lot more, so are the AA, AAA, etc. Lithium batteries.  So, theoretically, you could go down to Radio Shack or wherever and get rechargeable Lithium or NiMH batteries to use in a wireless Apple keyboard as long as you get the same size and voltage as the batteries Apple includes with it.

Your close. NiMH are not always interchangeable with alkaline. Alkaline are 1.5v while NiMH are 1.2v and some devises are very picky about that. Also Radio Shack is a rip off I can go to Target and get better NiMH batts for much less. Switching between NiMH and Lithium should be no problemo since they are both 1.2v

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

I find it ironic that after a year of use, a killed my apple pro keyboard today, the day apple came out with the new ones, by splilling hot soup on it.  Maybe it was some master plan by Jobs.  Or not.  All I know is that I'm currently using a logitec wireless keyboard, which has play/pause, stop, and next/back buttons for control of itunes (or any other app) from the background.  I personally don't like typing on this keyboard, and my machine won't go to sleep when the wireless reciever is plugged in.  It's time to replace my apple keyboard, but I'm going to be buying a new WIRED pro keyboard; I will save $50 by not having to buy a bluetooth adapter, and $30 on the keyboard vs. apple's wireless model.  Now it's just a choice of white vs. black.

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

First of all, these Bluetooth mice and keyboards are superior to the RF ones because they do not require an extra USB dongle (except computers without Bluetooth built in). Bluetooth is a wireless standard, so any Bluetooth device should work with any other Bluetooth device.

That said, I was quite dissapointed by these Bluetooth mice and keyboards, other than the fact that they're made by Apple and have relatively good battery life. The mouse is very lame, and the keyboard is a little lame.

The mouse:

One button? No scroll wheel? Blah. And who's great idea was it to make a wireless mouse completley symetrical so that people will constantly accidently flip it upside down and be confused when their coordinates are switched (sure theres a little Apple logo but who actually looks at their mouse?)

The battery life is actually decent compared to the MS version. Apple claims 3 months, but we'll see. I think I got about 1 month with my Microsoft Bluetooth mouse.

The keyboard:

I am still considering buying the keyboard. I already have the Microsoft Bluetooth keyboard, but it's a Windows keyboard so support is limited and it has lame things like a Start key and Application key, and a bunch of multimedia buttons that I wish would work (anyambitious programmers out there? wink ). I like the feel of the MS keyboard but its a little big.

The things I really like about the Apple Bluetooth keyboard is the battery life. Apple claims 9 months, but once again we'll see. I've been using the MS Bluetooth keyboard for about a month and it hasn't died yet wink The Apple BT keyboard also has 128 bit encryption, whic I'm not sure if the MS one does, but that seems like a good idea for the keyboard (who cares about the mouse). And the adaptive frequency hoping or whatever also seems good. Again, I don't know if the MS one has that.

Like I said, I've had the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop for Bluetooth for about a month now, and I've been pretty happy with it. For some reason the keyboard didn't work with my DLink Bluetooth adapter, so I'm using the one MS supplied with the set.

I'm usually completely anti-MS, but some of their hardware is decent, so I don't mind recommending their Bluetooth mouse, and possibly keyboard. The mouse has 5 buttons (right, left, scroll, and forward/back) but the 2 extra buttons and scroll button don't work (but the right/left and scroll wheel do)

If I were to do it again, I would buy the Microsoft mouse and the Apple keyboard.

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

Well, Apple has officially lost its mind in creating yet another line of one-button mice. Even though they look nice, and are wireless Apple products, I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole.

My Logitch MX500 offers 7 buttons and a scrollie... which would you pick? Hot damn.

given those choices? the apple mouse, hands down. althought i'd like a bt mx 310 more

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

The fact the mouse has only one button is not the reason why I won't buy it.

What I can't "tolerate" is the battery waste. I think Apple should have done like Sony does with it's portable CD players (give rechargeable batteries). The keyboard could come with an ac adapter that you could plug into the keyboard to recharge the batteries. The mouse could have a little dock or use the same keyboard AC adapter you could plug into it as well.

Of course, this is just my opinion, but, to me, it's valuable enough to not order these two products...

I like the 15" AluBook pretty much though smile.... but I'll stick with my 867MHz 12" one for a little while wink

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

An AC adapter seems excessive for a keyboard and mouse, how about a USB cable that provides power?

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

When you start plugging wireless devices into various cables for powering them, or whatever else, doesn't it defeat the purpose of having a wireless device in the first place?

Apple should just provide two sets of rechargeable batteries, to make for easy rotation and less waste.

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

A USB cable or AC adapter completely defeats the purpose of having a wireless keyboard or mouse, though...

Two sets of rechargeable Lithium batteries for each device, and an separate charger (which would be included if you buy the two together in a package) is all Apple would have to do.

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

I am going to make a late entrance and defend the one button mouse. A lot of mistakes people have ever made with windows are crap from left click/right click confusion shenanigans. This is actually something I try to avoid. Two-button mice are $20 anyway.

What I CANT defend is Apple's lust for the color white. WHY?!? Cant we get some blacks or blues?

As for power, why arent they expairementing with solar cells? You could power it sort of like a calculator.... or at least part of it. That sure would help the batteries last longer.

Re: New Apple Wireless keyboard and mouse!!

I agree a lot of mistakes are made using more than one button on the mouse.  However, these mistakes are usually made by beginners such as my parents, or some of those  people to whom I teach computers at the continuing education classes for adults at the local community college.  I think that the vast majority of people in the future will be able to handle multiple button mice.

Think about it:  when the calculator first came out, many people did not know how to use it.  Now, most any person can grab a calculator and use its basic functions.  Remember when you first hooked up a VCR/CD/or DVD player?  Remember how you had to learn audio left/right, video in/out?  Now you can do it in your sleep.  When DVD's first came out, people had trouble adjusting to "hidden features' and "optional viewing angles," but now most people use these features as second nature.

While Apple's one-button mouse is fine for beginners, there might come a time when it is too basic for a population born and raised with computers.    It's like this: there used to be some old walkmans (that played tapes, you know, those things people used to play and record music before CD's and CD-R's) that did not have a "Rewind" button.  Instead, people used to flip the tape over and press "Fast Forward," then flip the tape over again and play (that was how rewind was done).  I'm sure when the "Rewind" button was added, several people complained about the "added complexity" and there was "no good reason for an extra button" but we can all agree that having a Rewind button was a pretty good idea.  Right-clicking for a contextual menu (rewind button) seems like a very nice convenience instead of having to use the second hand to hold down a keyboard key (flipping over tape, pressing "FF", flipping tape over again, press play), without that much "complexity" being added to the overall computing experience.

i think your right, but i dont think the vast majorit of consumers will be able to use a 2 button mouse well for a very long time. this provides an elegant solution to those who want a simple wireless mouse. (and i cant stress enough how much of a benefit no dongle is)
