And the codec for copy-protected CDs is...

...you guessed it! Windows Media Audio.  blotto  down

These music industry smurfs. Haven't they ever heard of an iPod, AKA the most popular MP3 player on the market.

So if you buy the new Anthony Hamilton CD (And why would you?) and you want the tracks on your iPod, you would have to find someone with a PC and a CD burner, burn the WMA files to a CD, then re-rip them into iTunes. Totally inconvenient, not to mention being compressed twice.

Plus, pirates are just going to do the same thing, only re-rip to MP3. This is stupid. Get a clue guys, piracy is not killing the music industry; the fact that the music industry sucks is killing the music industry.

Linkage.

Arrrrr!  pirate

No, of course Windows is not a monopoly. See, the iPod is so popular, WMA doesn't control everything there, and so we need to rectify that error.

Re: And the codec for copy-protected CDs is...

If it really came down to it, i'm sure that the iPOd could be firmware upgraded to play WMA...

Also, does the music on the audio CD come compressed in WMA, or is it the uncompressed audio in a WMA wrapper?

Pretty sure it's compressed, because in the article they talk about emailing the tracks to your friend. I doubt too many people would be emailing uncompressed audio. Of course they can only play them ten times, and likely can't burn them.

There is no such thing as a "copy-protected" audio CD.  If you don't believe me, send me one, and I'll make you a copy.  wink

"What if they put copy protection in the disc and it doesn't ... reverse the decline of CD sales?" asked Phil Leigh, an analyst at Inside Digital Media. "If it doesn't help it's likely to hurt by just annoying people."

At least someone finally printed something along these lines, instead of just giving the nod to the music companies' excuse that it's all aout the pirates.

Arrrr, some modern buccaneer will take care of this problem! Some shareware will sink copy protection to Davy Jones' locker!

If you can listen to a song on a computer, you can disable any DRM. Anyone savvy enough to operate a desktop computer will figure it out sooner or later. It might require some shareware, or your soundcard may include the facility via it's own software. Either way, music companies are only fooling themselves.

Re: And the codec for copy-protected CDs is...

Ok. So don't buy the cd. That's what I say. Screw the RIAA.

And I was wondering. How would I know if a cd has DRM? Is there something that is written on the cd case? If there isn't, I would just return that cd. And they better take it back.
