Why can't we get Apple updates on the MacAddict Disks?

Is it due to some major legal issue?  Fear of virus writers?  To me, it would be a nice gesture to the majority of people who use 56k modems if the THIRTY-TWO FRIGGIN MEGABYTE Java update was on the disk.

Perhaps the staff will chime in with additional information since the last time they answered this one.  If I remember their prior comments correctly, they don't know for sure why.  It seems to have coincided with the availability of the 'Software Update' control panel in MacOS 9.  Prior to that the MacAddict disks did indeed include MacOS updates.   It seems silly to me also that Apple doesn't allow this now.  It hurts 56K users (still the bulk of the internet users) the most.

Re: Why can't we get Apple updates on the MacAddict Disks?

The official reason given was that (a few years ago) Apple decided that only Apple would be allowed to distribute updates, so anyone who distributed CD's on which Apple's updats appeared (MacAddict. Macworld, whoever else (user's groups?)) were banned from doing so anymore.  As to Apple's reasons?  Ask Apple.

Re: Why can't we get Apple updates on the MacAddict Disks?

1.  At the time, Apple made an official statement about "regaining control" ....... it didn't make much sense then, either.

2. But the major reason is marketing.  Those $10/$20 dollar "pay for the cost of the CD" update orders do generate some revenue for the company.  While this might, in a strict sense, be a good business move, it alienated more people than it helped the sales for Apple.

Now that, officially, the Apple Stores dropped the free burning of CD's if you asked for updates, it really is annoying to the dial-up crowd.

They need to wise-up and allow the mags to distribute these items on their various CD's.  Always such a love-hate relationship with this company ....  cry

Might also (conjecture alert!) have something to do with the corporate take on having sooo many Apple brick and moarter storefronts scattered throughout the nation with aaalll that lease money going down the tubes.

The bean counters say, "We gotta get more people into the stores. They can get their CD updates in person now while they oogle the merchandise."

Maybe now, but the updates were removed from non-Apple sources back around 1998-99.

Easy: Apple won't let us.  Period.  End of story.

Sad, really...

Re: Why can't we get Apple updates on the MacAddict Disks?

maybe it's cause they want total control over them.  if 10.2.8 went to MA and was on the disc for next issue, we'd have a faulty system, whereas if apple restricts it to swupdate and their site, they can pull it.  (not that they have this many problems with each update)
