Skips between tracks in iTunes
I've search and found nothing, so I guess I'll have to ask:
While playing multiple movements of a classical piece, or any music that should continue across multiple tracks, I can hear a small skip between the finished and next movement. This is quite annoying. My temporary solution has been to set Crossfade Playback to 2 seconds. This isn't perfect and I can still hear the gaps.
Does anyone know of a way to keeps the small gaps in sound from happening?
The MP3s are all on a separate (from the OS) 40GB, 7200RPM Western Digital hard drive in my G4 350 Sawtooth. Also, all my MP3s are encoded at 192kbps or greater. Would re-ripping them at 320kbps or higher help in any way?
Thanks for the assistance.

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
i think this is caused by the decoding of the mp3s themselves. I have noticed it when i rip a mixed "tape" cd and play them in the same order as the cd itself. At first i thought it was just itunes, but every program and device that I've ever used (with no crossfading) does this....
Maybe it's just me....

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
I don't think it has anything to do with the bitrate at which you encode. I have ripped tracks to uncompressed .aif files and you still hear the gaps.
I don't think there's much you can do in iTunes or on an iPod to get rid of the gaps other than crossfading, but I have been able to copy CDs in Peak without gaps between the tracks
Not that that really helps with your problem.

Have You Considered using the "Join Tracks" feature while importing from the CD? This does however make one large track instead of individual tracks, but there is no skip.

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
That would be nice, but it's rather inconvenient when you can't start at the beginning of a movement.

I'm not sure. You might want to talk to someone about that.

What app has this "Join Tracks" feature. I want to put Pink Floyd on my (2nd Gen) iPod without gaps.

iTunes v. 3 and 4. As mentioned earlier, you have to do it when you're importing it from the CD. If you've already ripped the CD, you're going to have to at least rename the first track temporarily so you can re-rip.

Do you mean the little pause between tracks? That's fairly normal. I'm not sure if you can do away with that entirely - but it goes away if you record the tracks back onto cd.

And pretty natural, I might add. Go to any concert live and there will be quite a pause between movements while musicians turn pages, re-tune, etc. Plus you have all the duffuses who don't know better than to applaud between movements they have to wait for.

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
I remember being able to have tracks run from one to another, in the way you want, in iTunes 3 (Beatles' Abby road comes to mind) by setting crossfade playback to 0. However, it no longer plays as smoothly in iTunes 4 as 3. I'm guessing it's a bug.

It's not a bug, it's a feature.
(Oh, wait. That's M$'s line, isn't it? Never mind.)

This is true, but there are also movements that flow without pause into another movement.
Anyone listen to Radiohead's OK Computer? Tracks one and two are supposed to flow together. It sounds unnatural when they don't.

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
Really simple to solve this in iTunes 4:
Just select the tracks you want to play without breaks, then Get Info on them, and select "Yes" for "Part of a Compilation" (It's on the second row from the bottom). It works perfectly to me when I used it on my live CDs.

Re: Skips between tracks in iTunes
There's a huge thread about this 'gap' issue on the Apple boards themselves. A lot of people are experiencing gaps between songs, and it's been apparent even with the first iPod as well as iTunes 4.
So either Apple has ignored this problem or people haven't made enough of a stink about it...or...
I've had this problem on a few CD's where the gap will appear just after a song has started. It's really annoying and I could only fix it with crossfade, with seemed to fix the problem on the iPod as well. Until I ripped Pink Floyd's "Dark Side", then the situation arose again, and well, the only thing I've been able to do about it is to rip the entire CD as one whole track.
