New HD sadness

Hey, just recentally I was looking at my computers specs and saw that it used ATA.  I was quite pleased as I had an extra ATA hard Drive laying around.  So, (I dont have instructions but I figured it out anyway) I replaced the 800 MB HD that was in there (I got the computer from a seccond had dealer, only 35 bucks and a free monitor!).  Anyway, before I put in my new HD the computer worked fine with system 7.5.1( I belive this is the one, it is around here if not 7.5.1).  After I put in the new HD I booted up and it got to the Booting mac os 9.2 screen after a happy mac.  Then I got a screen that read that this startup disk will not work with this Macintosh.  Install the proper  stuff from your most recent OS install CD.  Now, this HD used to be in my iMac, which had been running 9.2 untill it got corrupted, then I replaced it with a 40 GB one and have been very happy, but that is beside the point.  So I tried to boot off my OS 8.6 instal CD, my nortin system works cd (1.0) and my Yellow Dog linux CD, ( holding C).  It did not work, same stuff happened, however I know that the connection to the keyboard works because the mouse (connected through the keyboard) worked for me to click the restart button at the alert when I booted up).  SO me question is how do I get this thing to boot off of a CD so I can partition my Hard drive how I would like?  Thanx for any help and if you don't know the answer could you point me in the right direction thanx.

Re: New HD sadness

Which Mac Model is it?

Did the OS 8.6 com with the iMac?

If it did and you're using the primary install CD for the iMac, chances are that won't boot up because it's Computer specific.  The restore CD may work if you are talking about a PPC Mac, but it still can be ify.  If it's a 68k Mac, then you're not going to use it at all.  Go to the Apple website and DL OS 7.5 from their site here.
You can use it to make a startup disk as well to prep the drive.

If it is a PPC (pre-G3), it may be a firmware issue where the drive needs to a clean install while in the system your placing it in.

OS 9.2.2 will not work on a PPC (pre-G3)computer without first installing it with a helper app that fixes an issue with the resource forks.

The Mac model would help to acertain possible system specific problems you may be facing.

Re: New HD sadness

Yeah sorry about those ify things.
It is a 4400/200.
The HD was origionally in the iMac
The instal CD was the one that came with the iMac
The HD has a bootleg and corrupted version of 9.2 on it
I want to erase everything on the hard drive.

Re: New HD sadness

...and booting the 4400 from a CD won't work?

Maybe a fouled jumper on the drive. Or, your CDs are too old/new to run on the 4400 (not enough memory). Or you broke something. I think the 4400 requires 7.6.1, the ones we used to have at work ran fine with 8.1.

Re: New HD sadness

Ok, I got it to boot from a CD into NOrton system works.  I got it up running and took a few files off onto a disk for my mom.  Then I tried to initalize the HD, it went about half way through and then it stopped because of an error.  I forget the error (should have written it down).  But anyway, when I restart I don't even get to laoading I just get the "wheres the system?" blinking question mark disk.  So I tried to boot from norton, OS X (figured maybe the disk untility would help here) and 8.6 software restore CD and YDL Linux 2.3.
Linux didn't work, and OS X seemed to do something because when I put it in at the blinking disk icon at the startup the computer restarted, but then the screen never came on (I had to zap the Pram several times to even get the screen to come on again).  So now what I am wondering about is how do I carve up my HD?  When I am working from system works I don't even see the HD on the desktop, I am guessing I got rid of some of the main files during my attempt to initilize it.  How to I see my HD and how can I begin to put a new OS on it?  Thanx
