I'm away from my powerbook, and Apple doesn't doesn't have a simple compatibility table available on its Airport page, at least nothing I can find, so I have what may be a simple question for some...

I don't currently have an airport card, but someone can pick one up for me tomorrow, so I need to know soon (now) if my orig 12PB is Airport compatible or Airport Extreme compatible. Then I can get the appropriate card.

If it was the 12" PB that was introduced in January, yes, it does support AirPort Extreme.

To be a bit more precise, it requires the Airport Extreme card. The two different cards are totally different physically and one will not fit into a slot designed for the other.

However, the Extreme card will work with the older basestation, and I presume vice versa.

You presume correctly, as long as the Extreme base station is NOT set to 802.11g mode only.

And as for the difference, the older AirPort cards are based on PCMCIA, and the new ones are based on PCI.

All 12 inch PowerBooks support Airport Extreme... I hope to get one for mine soon... Power to us 12 inch users!
