No Level 3 Cache on PowerBook 12"
First of all I just wanted to say that the 12" PowerBook seems like the answer to my prayers. I am heading off to college soon and really wanted a G4 portable but I couldn't justify spending $2400 on a Powerbook as I have a 867 Quicksilver G4, meaning I was going to settle for an iBook. I can however justify spending $1700. Yay!
I was just hoping to get a little input as to how the new PB's lack of a level 3 cache would effect performance. Thanks for the help.

p.s. can anyone reiterate the rule on affect vs. effect for me? ^_^

Re: No Level 3 Cache on PowerBook 12"
I still wonder why Apple decide to leave out the l3 cache in this version of pb, I mean 12.1 is not a threat to 15.2/17! and 1799 should be plenty of profit margin to put the better cpu in!

Re: No Level 3 Cache on PowerBook 12"
Someone mentioned that it was because of a lack of space as compared to the other models but it doesn't really take up any space at all... Can anyone tell me how much of a difference to expect from my 867 Quicksilver Tower (SP)?

Actually I'm pretty sure games would be hurt the least (or demanding tasks). Most would probably be stuff that's manipulating a huge amount of media data like Photoshop, Final Cut, etc.
It would be interesting to see how much it hurts performance in different things though.

Re: No Level 3 Cache on PowerBook 12"
I've read many threads from many websites about this particular model. Some have been good, some bad. I think this machine is great. So great in fact, that I'm replacing my PM G4 with it. It has faster RAM, same bus speed, comparable hard drive size, faster CPU and basically the same GPU. Plus, I can hook it up to and external VGA with maximum 1600x1200 resolution. This is basically a low-end Quicksilver G4 tower in a 12" case. Plus, I get Bluetooth so that I can use my Sony Cell Phone with it and I get a faster Airport network. For the price, you can't beat this little machine.
Granted, the machine doesn't have L3 cache and that will be noticable in a side by side comparison with the other machines that do have it. BUT, I hardly think this is a huge factor. Combined with the slower hard drive speeds, no CardBus slot, and only 1x on the SuperDrive, then you have a case to make. But, you have to sacrifice something in order to get it into such a small case.
