there is naim, although I'm not sure if its available on OS X. I used it shortly in FreeBSD, but found it annoying compared to gaim

how'd you get gaim running? i install but i get dependency issues

Probably the easiest way to get gaim running on OS X (i don't have it any more, but did at one point) is to use fink. Its a really good package system and basically takes care of all of the dependencies for you. Get fink and follow the instructions, then once its all set up, type fink install gaim and it should install all the dependencies before starting to compile and install gaim for you.

i compiled and installed naim myself last night, it wasn't hard.
as long as you are alive there is a chance that you will die.... but eventually fate catches up with you.
