trouble making a computer-to-computer connection via airport

i'm staying with a friend this week and i'm trying to connect my powerbook up to his wireless network and i'm having a bit of trouble.  he's got a 802.11b card coming out of one of his pc's, and what i'm trying to do is make a wireless point-to-point connection to his machine, and use it as a gateway to the internet.  that's what he's doing with his laptop and it's working fine.  when i try to set up a new computer-to-computer connection, however, it doesn't find anything.

two things i know about his settings are that i have to set up the connection to be ad-hoc, and that he's operating on channel 6.  i have no problem choosing the channel when creating the network, but i'm not sure how to do set it up to be ad-hoc, or if there's some kind of mac/airport-specific analogue that i need to know about.

anybody out there have any ideas?
