FPS and consoles

I've got a TiBook w/ 32 Radeon and the computer serves me well, I doubt I'll need a new Mac for several more years. The only "problem" with it is that it doesn't play new games as well as I would like, and I am thinking about upgrading my Dreamcast to a PS2 or an Xbox soon. I like FPS and the DC lets me use a mouse and keyboard. My question is this: what PS2 FPS games have keyboard/mouse support, and also how decent are the games on both PS2 and Xbox that don't support these?

Thanks

Re: FPS and consoles

If you want FPSs Xbox is the obvious choice. It has more and better FPSs and the controller is much better suited for it. Also a weird controller/mouse hybrid is coming for the Xbox if you simply cannot use a gamepad but you really do get used to it. Halo, Unreal Championship, 007: Nightfire, TimeSplitters 2, Halo 2, Doom III, Star Wars: Jedi Outcast 2, the list really does go on and on for Xbox FPSs. Not to mention if you want a graphics upgrade, Xbox will offer much more in that area. Hope this helps. Give a controller a chance!

So long,

Re: FPS and consoles

I would reccomend a PS2 well before I would reccomend an XBox.  The XBox has 2 really excellent games:  HALO and Splinter Cell.  HALO is coming out for Mac and Splinter Cell is coming out for PS2.  Controller aside, any FPS you can get on the XBox  you'll most likely be able to get it for PS2.  Plus you can get GTA:VC.  PS2 all the way.

Anyone know the answer to his question? I want to know too. I really don't like FPS on the PS2, I can't get used to using one stick for moving and the other for looking, it's too awkward. I checked out Nightfire from my brother's friend and played the MOH demo, I didn't get far in either. I really, really, really missed my mouse and keyboard.

Re: FPS and consoles

I know you can get a USB keyboard for a PS2, and I would imagine you cna get them for Xbox or GCN as well. I am not that big on FPS games, and I dont know much about the game line up for the Xbox, but myself I prefer PS2s.

I would advise just going down to best buy or toys r us or some electronics store and looking at all the games for the xbox, ps2, and gamecube. Then when you see the games that appealed to you the most, go home and look up reviews of them on the net.

Another thing you might do is rent a console out from blockbuster or a video store. I am not sure if they still do it (the blockbuster here recently stopped renting out videogame systems), but if they do I would advise renting the console of choice, and testing out a few games you think look interesting, and finaly making your decision based on that.

Maybe i am just really cautious about my purcahses, but I have always been a lot happier when I tested the smurf out of the system before I bought it. To me at least, i would rather be safe than sorry smile

Good Luck   wink

Re: FPS and consoles

Yeah, an Xbox has almost everything I want but I don't want to use a controller, mouse and keyboards are best for FPS IMO. It will be interesting to see if they release something that will give as much control but is hand-held. I'll believe it when I see it.

The problem with the PS2 is even though it supports mice and keyboards, some games don't, like MofHF. That's just sad.

Re: FPS and consoles

Mouse and keyboard are nessesairy for FPSs. When i do play them on consols (Halo, red faction) I can play them, and can even play them fairly well. But during the game, i constantly think "if i had a mouse, that would have been a head shot" "if i had a mouse, you would be a crater now" "if i had a mouse..." Well you get the picture.

Re: FPS and consoles

OK, I got an Xbox and rented Medal of Honor. My feelings:

1. I got seasick playing it for the first few hours.
2. I liked it after I got over feeling ill.
3. The Xbox ControlerS is the best console controler so far for FPS IMO. I hated the PS1's dual shock for QII.
4. A mouse and keyboard rule for that sort of game.
5. Xbox graphics are way smoother than my Ti667DVI. It may be a TV, but at least the framerate stays constant most of the time.
6. Microsoft may be an evil corporation, but at least they are an evil corporation that makes a good game console.
7. http://www.gamefly.com rules. For $22 a month, you can rent as many games as you can play (have 2 out at a time) and keep them as long as you want without late fees. It beats Blockbuster, which is $10 for 2 games for 7 days. That's an equivelant $40 an month if you rent 2 games each week. Just so ya' know.

Re: FPS and consoles

PS2 has the most FPS's out there, but the quality of the exclusive ones is not very good (see TimeSplitters and Red Faction) but the good ones are on all consoles (TimeSplitters 2, Medal of Honor: Frontline (with GameCube and XBOX having the superior versions) Red Faction II is comming to the GameCube and I'm not sure about XBOX.  XBOX does have the edge in future FPS's.  HALO 2, Perfect Dark 0.

get an XBOX, HALO and you will have three games to play (all three are great games BTW) so you'll be fine for quite some time.

(FYI, XBOX comes with Jet Set Radio Future and SEGA GT 2002, by Smilebit and WOW entertainment respectively, which are both development teams at SEGA)

you will have a good selection no matter which console you choose though, but the PS2 will have the most dated hardware, and it shows, the GameCube is behind the XBOX (but ahead of PS2) in terms of quality FPS's as it's versions of the multi-platform ones are on par with the XBOX ones, but above the quality of the PS2 ones.

Re: FPS and consoles

Jet Set Radio Future and Sega Gt 2002 came with my Xbox, and made me very happy. I liked what Jet Grind Radio on the DC tried to do, but the graffiti system never was very fun IMO. JSRF is all the good and none of the bad of JSR. It's a really cool game. And Sega GT 2002 is likewise a major improvement over Sega GT on the DC. Actually, the Xbox seems like the 'next' DC, with the ControllerS being so similar in many ways, but with three more buttons and another joystick. Too bad there isn't mouse/keyboard support or a true VGA box. Maybe someday.

Don't forget Unreal Championship, Ghost Recon, and eventually Doom III. I hate M$ but I'm enthusiastic about the Xbox. This way, I have the best of both worlds: Macs for computing and an Xbox for gaming (the only decent use of a Windows PC anyway wink )

Re: FPS and consoles

Do you like to play games online, or do you prefer single player?  If you play 'em online get the xbox and LIVE!!!!  Live is fantastic, I play ghostrecon almost daily.  No other console can begin to think about touching what MS has with live and the xbox.  Not to mention alot of companies are starting to develop games for the xbox and porting them out to ps2 and gamecube, which means that the xbox gets the best version of the game.

On the controller question, if you have big hands you will probably like the xbox controller, it fits my hands perfectly and is setup just right for fps games (imho).  I wouldn't even think about using a mouse/keyboard for an fps anymore.

Xbox is the way to go if you like FPS games, there's Halo, UC, Ghost Recon, Ravin Shield is Coming, along with Halo 2, Operation Flashpoint, and so many others that I can't think of right now.
