Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

Has anyone had any luck with secure web sites? I haven't been able to get to any https sites.

I was just able to go to http://www.cdw.com and add an item to a shopping cart, and it did load a secure page.  I was also able to go to my bank and view my various accounts, and I'm sure that's a secure page.  However, there's no indication that a page is secure aside from the "https" in the URL in the location bar, and there's no way I could find to view and/or manage the site certificates.

djdawson,

Whenever I'm at a secure site on Safari, there's a little black padlock icon in the upper-right corner of the window.  Maybe it's not showing all the time?  I would, though, like to be able to view and manage the site certificates like you said in your post.

Other than tabbed browsing and the inability to import other browser bookmarks (for now,) I love this browser and have cleared up some dock space.

Yes, slashdot.org comes in very fast.  Another slow-loading page to try is:

http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/

I agree, the older machines probably see the biggest "human" difference. A 20% speed-up will be obvious in an old G4-400 like mine, but maybe barely noticeable in a dual-1GHz.

I do like the new Bookmark arrangement, but I do miss having a straight list. Why can't we have a drawer?

It' so nice to be able to view history and bookmarks that way.

I do have to say that I do really like the look of it, despite the brushed metal. It's well designed and the buttons, unlike mail, are much easier to associate with their functions.

How does it work on just regular 10.2...has anyone tried it...as opposed to 10.2.3...I usually avoid ".x.x" upgrades until a new OS comes out (unless there is a piece of software, driver, etc. that I must run).

Wow, that is pretty er... not smart. Apple is continuously updating things to run better and fix bugs. Why would you not update?

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

I'd use it if it had an appearance similar to Chimera and OmniWeb. I HATE brushed metal.

Tabbed browsing is a biggie too. Konqueror has tabbed browsing so hopefully Apple can integrate this.

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

Macmav:

I'm running it on 10.2, with no particular problems outside a frameset issue posted elsewhere here.

I tend to wait a month or two before running system upgrades myself; I've only been on 10.2 for a week so want to make sure it's all in order before running software update

Go ahead and give safari a try. I see a slight improvement in speed, and if it allows me to ditch the last peice of microsoft crapware from my hard drive, hoo-ray.

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

I do prefer the "look and feel" of OmniWeb to Safari (the buttons that should throb do!). I think I prefer Safari's bookmark management to OW's. Much cleaner, although I'd like to be able to drag multiple bookmarks at the same time.

OW does feel more Mac-like, I think. The look of fonts in Safari seems about equal to OW which is great because in IE, it really sucks.

I think I like Safari about as much as I like Chimera with some added enthusiasm for the general tidiness of the app. I feel that they're equally quick. Especially handy is being able to turn pop-up blocking on or off with a keystroke. And what's really great is that the ZOOM BUTTON DOESN'T MAKE WEB SITES TAKE UP THE WHOLE SCREEN.

I'd like to be able to navigate links with the keyboard. I'd like click+holding to bring up contextual menus. And I'd like the look to be more refined.

In the upper right hand corner of the window there is a little lock, showing a secure site.

Why not import them directly???

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

Ditto on the tabbed browsing.  I want it now!

A few gripes:
Hotmail: it thinks JavaScript is disabled when it's not.  I always have to un-check and re-check JavaScript and go back there a few minutes later.

If I'm speeding along sites (I do love how Safari loads a lot of text first), meaning I click links before a page is finished loading, I'm noticing various images not loading on the page I'm trying to get to or the page I just came from when I back up to it.

Other than that, it's a great thing.  I want tabbed browsing!

Oh, and I'm not sure if it's in IE, but I would seriously like it if it was able to let me halt a download and restart it later.  Download helpers like Monica are a BIG help with dial-up users like me.

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

Because it's not in the public beta.

Thus far it looks like: Brushed metal, a few unique features (SnapBack, iTunes-like bookmark management), far fewer features than IE, and faster page loads on some pages, slower page loads on others. I also don't notice more than a second of startup time difference. Nice icon, though.

"It is a beta, after all."

can you believe it. we finally get a fncking apple browser
and some idiot can only bitch about it. what a dork.

job. i will support safari and not bitch about it. i dont
mind constructive critisism but bitching about safari
or apple is a joke.

Re: Safari: Apparently the speed will be in v. 1.0

Safari's great, I'm not about to delete Chimera or anything but for a beta Apple's done a great job.

Perhaps it's because Jobs was saying SPEED SPEED SPEED (some paraphrasing wink  ) that people focus on it.

I love it. Unbelievably fast on my Pismo 400 with 10.2.3. And I happen to like the brushed metal look. Why are so many people down on it?

Because it's butt ugly wink ... but if people like it they should be able to use it.  I just wish I had the choice to use the Aqua white interface.  I know you can easily change it with a haxie, but the choice from Apple would be nice.  IMHO of course...

Version tracker has the version number wrong... it is still 1.0 v51.

A fellow 56ker had mentioned earlier that it would be nice to start and stop downloads.  Go grab iGetter.  It works well with Safari for me... G3 500 PBook (Pismo) running 10.2.3.

Oh yeah... I have had no problem with secure sites.  USAA and USBank.
