Re: Bikes
Nah, there's a company in TN (I think) that makes them. It's a long story, but my brother has one. Actually, it's a bit terrifying the first time you ride it. You sit way high, don't pedal, and you're going 20 mph. It's really weird.

Hehe, is that a kick-back brake it's got in the rear? Seems like you could do pretty well to kill yourself with one of those...

Re: Bikes
Yes, it has a coaster brake. There is a lever that looks like a car's clutch pedal on the left side coming from the motor. (it's kind of hard to see in the pic) how the bike works, is when you want to engge the motor, you just push that lever forward, and motor pivots which pushes a drive wheel against the rear tire. It's a pain to hold that lever forward the whole time, and I haven't seen the bike in a while, I think my brother modified it to be a little more friendly.
The gas tank is ornamental, actually, you could put a few wrenches and a tube in there if you really wanted.
That's about it, otherwise, it's basically a normal cruiser.

Re: Bikes
At the beginning, the hardest thing about clipless was clipping in for me actually. The first off-road ride I did with my Times, I was going downhill, I unclipped both sides in a series of turns, then after I needed to clip back in, I couldn't because there were too many roots and rocks. And those pedals are so darn tiny, I couldn't keep my feet on them, so I ended up, well, on the rocks
Did I ever learn that day!
I don't know what they call them anymore, but thats exactly why i got my big red shimano 636s. They weigh a TON but you can ride unclipped, or they're super easy to clip into, because you just put your foot on the cage and you cleats slide in.

Re: Bikes
Yeah, I know about clipless platforms, they're just a little heavy for XC use. But being a Time fan, I plan on giving their new platforms a try.

At the times when I have thought about switching to clipless pedals, those 636s are the ones that I have thought about getting. I like the idea of being able to ride unclipped, and I also like the idea of having a lot of extra support for your foot while you are clipped in. They seem like they would distribute pressure better and be more comfortable than normal clipless pedals would be.

Exactly. yeah, they're heavy, but totally worth it. i use the same shoes and cleats in my road pedals (some old one sided shimanos) and my feet are always way more comfortable on the mountain bike. To heavy for XC? naah...too heavy for road? yeah.
If you want to switch, i'd say go for it! they're great starter pedals

And because I could get them for next to nothing from the shop I work at. Ah, the wonders of being a bicycle mechanic

Re: Bikes
As most of you know, I work in a bike shop. Working in a shop, I tend to read a lot of mountain biking magazines. They let me know what people think of the new products and teach me about the new technologies. I have a subscription to Bike, but my favorite is Mountain Bike Action. So this brings me to me question, what is your favorite biking magazine? Please say the name and why you like it.
I like Mountain Bike Action because it has the most product tests and reviews, and the least articles about some bike ride that a bunch of people I don't care about went on.

Re: Bikes
Okay, I finally have a picture of my bike.
I've been upgrading the parts all weekend. Gonna have a whole new drivetrain by the time I'm done.
Nice ride! I've always liked that full-suspension, cadillac-soft sort of feel!

Re: Bikes
Vagacini Junior Track frame, fork drilled for shimano 600 brake, ProMax mtb lever, chopped flat bar.
Miche Primato hubs, Mavic X517 26" rims.
Suntour cranks, Time ATAC pedals.
Nuthin' beats fixed for riding through the snow on the streets of T.O. But then, I'm a bit of a control freak

Interesting setup... 26" wheels on a track frame? What size tires do you have? What/where is T.O.?

No doubt, fixed gear is where it's at for commuting. You got Suntour Suberbe cranks on that or some other model of Suntour? How did drilling out that fork work? I have a lot of people come in the shop wanting to do it, but I never know if it's a good idea or not.

Re: Bikes
I don't have a subscription to any of the mags. What I do is every month I go to the store and check out all the mags, see which one might have the most intersting features that particular month. I end up buying Mountain Bike Action and Bicycling the most often.

king, those are basically the same size as 650c rims, which are common for smaller road and track frames. The Fuji Ace SE and Fuji Track SE are both stocked with 650c wheels for smaller riders.

I used to do that, and then I realized that it was three times more expensive to buy a magazine in the store than it was to get them through a subscription. I think I'm probably gonna get a subscription to Mountain Bike Action since I end up buying it almost every month.

Re: Bikes
Swiss just gave me this thread, so I thought I would catch up:
Mag? Dirtrag baby. Maybe they don't have the best product tests, but I still love their humor. Oh and lets not mention that the product tests they do do are on good and out of the way products.
Bike? '00 Treak 8000. I got it for rellay cheap(around $700 after the discount from being an older model and team bikeshop discount) I have not made any adjustments other than the seat(which I lost in Moab, so if anyone was riding out their and found a chile peper seat, contact me
) and the peadles which I switched out for 747 Shimano. I am thinking bout upgrading the fork if I can find a cheap front air shock.
Hey Swiss, do you still have your Bike Mag subcription? If so you should check out this month. The cover article is all about a freeride comp. I think that free riding would be cool as hell, but I am to pussy to do it, so for now I will stay an XC'er
So my question for j00 guys, do any of you ride/race down here in TN? If so I hope tp see ya their

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do have this month's edition of Bike. I saw the cover about the freeride competition, but I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I will at some point, and let you know what I think

Re: Bikes
swiss_less: the fork drilling has been fine: of course, the brake is pretty much an "I'm too tired/drunk/cut off to rely 100% on my legs" thing, so the stress on it is low. Ya, the cranks are Suntour Superbe.
King, The tires are 1" Specialized Flak Jacket, great for all the glass bits.
T.O. would be Toronto Ontario, BTW.
