Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
Man, I would love to have FCE. It seems to be a perfect solution for us "prosumers". There's no way I could justify FCP for editing the weddings I shoot, but Express may be just the ticket. Somebody please buy it so they give us the lowdown.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
I use the full version...was hoping for FCP 4
You shoot weddings, where?
I work for a small business in Northern Michigan and we shoot about 40 a year. I convinced my boss to buy 3 Macs to improve the company. We can do so much now that people are surprised there's only a few of us working there.
I think the express version is for prosumers as you say....I just wonder what it is missing? I'm worried teachers may buy it for schools and it won't do enough.

i expect FCP4 in the very near future.
when's the DV-style show where that good stuff comes out?
or it could come out on a random day.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
I've shot 2 weddings. I edited them in iMovie. On this last one which I'm still working on, I shot way more than just the wedding itself. I sort of scripted it. It opens with a slide show of pictures from their childhood and how they met. Next, I have them in various scenes of wedding prep, followed by the wedding, reception, gift opening and shoving off on their honeymoon. Finally more photos (which they took on honeymoon). I really wish I could have had better audio tools. This is one area where I need major improvement.
First I'm gonna get iMovie 3.0 and see what if any tools that adds. Then, I'm going to look at FCE. If I can justify the $$$, I'll get that.
I have a work associate whom just yesterday asked me if there was any way I could export his PeeCee PowerPoint slides to a movie format. I said I would give it try. Not knowing of course that Apple today was going to announce "Keynote". This looks to be a perfect application for just such a project. Thanks for saving my a$$ Apple.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
oh man, shooting weddings just sux. I feel for you guys...especially in da UP, where showing up in a polished Green Bay leather football jacket is considered "formal."
Ha! Y'all are probably still in mourning up there. Did they cancel public school this week and are the flags flying at half-mast?
Anyway, the only difference I can tell about the full vs. LE versions of FCP are the advanced format options. If you're working in DV, LE might be enough for ya. However, if you're doing film/component/uncompressed media, you'd need full FCP.

Actually we charge $1500-2500 for weddings.
We also do commercials, Industrial Videos, Promotional videos and more...

Hey, my fiancee is from Copper Harbor, MI, a bit north of you up there. We manage to make it up to the UP about once a year.
How's the snow?

NAB's later this month (I believe). I use FCP, and it = good.
To be equal you have to add or subtract. And I have never liked math. People who want to be equal's lives are filled with subtractions and auditions. We will call you back and tell you. - MM

Barely any right now...mostly melted. But there is a storm coming and they are predicting 6-10 inches.
We had 300" last year.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
I would have gotten Final Cut Pro Express... If i didn't already shell out for the full version!!
Actually, I didn't shell out that much for the full version, as I got the first FCP 1.0 at the student price back in winter '98 (or whenever it first came out-- i ordered it very next week).
So i never really paid full price for FCP or any of it's upgrades, BUT if I wasn't a student, and I needed to get video editing software, i would get FCP Express.
it appears to have the same layer-manipulation capabilities as the full version (something completely lacking in iMovie), and that's my number one need in my style of filmmaking (what style you ask? the style that uses a lot of still images incorporated with DV footage).
I like having my compositing capabilities and DV editing capabilities in one App, and FCP Express seems to have kept those two parts of FCP in tact just fine.
ps - my wedding videos were so good, that's why i'm now in film graduate school... (and I vow never to do another wedding ever again)

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
Apple hasn't been very clear on exactly what is missing in FCE from FCP, so I need to know that before I could say. Some "Pro" features is too vague for me.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
Yeah, I just looked at their website, and I kind of have this thing where I hate to have scaled down versions of stuff. If I went to FCE, I would definately miss the real-time 3-way color corrector, offline RT, After Effects Plug-in Support, logging and batch capture, and advanced key-framing. Especially those last two.
But those few features are like 3 times the price, so I don't know.

Re: Final Cut Express...who's buying it?
I kinda like doing weddings. It's a very special time for a couple and I want to do my best to capture the moment(s). For me it's the challenge of taking a situation that is counterproductive to videotaping and making it appear to be gold. Weddings are always dark and you can't always get the angle you want. That's why I run two cameras (wish I had 3) and edit the heck out of them afterward. I also design a custom box for each wedding and come up with a different theme for each one. Each couple gets three copies; one for them, and one for each set of parents. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed them. Repeat business is the best; I'll be doing my third wedding for the same family in May.
