Re: The next time someone uses the 2%/98% marketshare line
yeah but BMWs arent made out of the same parts as a ford or anyother car.. Apples for the most part have the same parts as pcs do made by the same companies. only a fool thinks apple still makes the whole widget.
Ok, then perhaps the Lexus/Toyota analogy would suit you better, since Toyota owns Lexus, and many part are shared between them, yet Lexus is a premium car, and Toyota is more mainstream. Analogies are ok to help someone understand a particular situation when they are interested to understand, but when they are used to make a point or rebuke someone elses point of view in a debate, they are silly, because, of course you can always poke holes in an analogy. IT IS AN ANALOGY.
Using analogies in here is to help newbie or potential Mac buyers understand the basis that other people have for why they consider their Mac valuable. They are not necessarily to prove to all the descenders out there that Mac is best for them. So this business of rebutting every analogy in here always makes me laugh, because it just proves that the rebutter doesn't get it, is not a member of the Mac community and is only interested in trolling.

1984 $1 million in annual sales (nationwide)
This one's got to be a typo or an error.
Or not. Remember, they were once upon a time beleaguered.

Re: The next time someone uses the 2%/98% marketshare line
If a mac is the BMW of off the shelf one size fits all computers, then building your own out of better parts for less would be the "Space Shuttle of computers"
I have a space shuttle...huhuh hehe, cool.
In all seriousness I don't like most off the shelf PC's or the companies that sell them, building your own or having one built from top quality consumer parts is he only way to go IMO... I personally don't like paying triple for a budget FX5200 video card PC Club has on sale for $50

You sure you want to use that analogy? The space shuttle is an aging dinosaur with numerous design flaws. Sure, it gets you to where you want to go, but recent events have inspired many to scrap the whole fleet and invest in something more reliable. Maybe go with the International Space Station. Now there's a model of modularity.

If you'll take note of the year that was when the Macintosh was introduced.

Re: The next time someone uses the 2%/98% marketshare line
Whenever the market share thing comes up I just like to throw in the question "2% market share of how many total users?" Because let's say Apple had a consistant 2% for a few years in a row. While the percentage remains the same, the total number of all computer users has grown, and so Apple has been gaining customers. Even if the percentage is in fact falling, Apple could still be gaining new users.

The numbers on that list go back to 1978; Apple's sales didn't just drop to nothing the year the Mac was introduced.

The next time someone uses the 2%/98% marketshare line, I'll use the BMW analogy again.

Ok. here's another car analogy:
A PC is like a Ford F-350 Super Duty truck
It costs less, has a bigger engine, and more storage space.
A Mac is like a Toyota MR2 Spyder:
It costs more, has a smaller engine an less storage space, but it looks a lot better, and it's faster.
