2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Every server I get on that has humans, I get bumped from. The game plays normally for one spawn. At respawn, or shortly thereafter, I'm just running through the map, unable to fire or see the other players.
I'd been playing online fine before running the patch.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
OK it looks like I'll have to backup all my custom maps, etc. and reinstall the dang thing. I don't suppose there's a place I can send some feedback to, so they can track the issue?

Brain, did you trash or rename your User.ini and UT2003.ini files and let the patched UT2K3 create new ones? You should if you didn't then see how it runs. You could email Rayan Gordon. Link on his page.

No I didn't Doc. Oh man, did I skip a step in the readme in my hurry to install the patch? Thanks, Doc. I'll give it whirl now.

So far, so good; I did as you instructed. I'm back to normal, getting my lame butt plastered by 10 year olds.
Thanks again, Doc. You have come to exemplify for me what the Clan MA (UT) Forum was always supposed to be about: helping folks have a good time.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Now I get bumped from every server in my Favorites tab. If it's just bots on a server, I might last three frags. Once a human joins, I'm out the next time I get fragged. The map is running, but there's no players onscreen, the weapons don't actually fire; nothing. I see myself in the F1 screen but I'm no longer in the game; a ghost. Not happy here.

Hmm... I have no clue.
Let's start at the beginning:
Machine, proc, vid card and RAM:______
OS version:_____
Version of UT2K3 with updates:_____
Mutators installed:_____
Settings in the game:_____
Connection to the net (type, router, etc.):_____
Sometimes it's the obvious that one does not see until forced to think through each step.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Thanks, DocB. I seem to say that a lot lately.
Machine, proc, vid card and RAM:
QuickSilver dual 800, geForceTi4, 1.25 GBs RAM
OS version:
10.3
Version of UT2K3 with updates:
UT2003 MacOS X 2225.1 patch
installed on OS X logical drive, in Applications folder
Settings in the game:
low for everything, 800 x 600
Connection to the net:
bandwidth set in game prefs to Cable/DSL
Cable Modem:
Motorola (will get details)
Router:
MacSense XRouter MIH120 10BaseT
I'll start TR-ing all my servers.
Hey, BTW, I ran into none other than {RA}FormStranger on one of my ping- selected DM servers! He couldn't believe it was me. Unfortunately I kept getting bumped from the server. He and I used to DM 1v1 on Omega server all the time.

Ahh... sleep clears the brain... so to speak.
Brain check SETTINGS/Network and be sure the coerrect speed is set in the popup. If you are on a high speed connection (Cable/DSL, T1/LAN) UNcheck the Dynamic Netspeed button just below the popup.
Don't know if that will help but it is easy to try.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
I have three things that have changed before the problem developed, I will eliiminate the easy one. The first and the last one could take quite a while to re-install:
Things that have changed since trouble began:
1. Installed Panther
2. Enabled iTunes Music sharing (nice!) and iChat on the firewall between mine and my wife's computers on the LAN
3. Installed UT Patch

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
OK I'm a Big, Fat Idiot like Rush Limbaugh (at least I'm not a drug addict, only a MacAddict)!
Somehow after I reformatted and restored my applications (or maybe after running the patch), UT2k3 reset itself to Modem speed, with Dynamic NetSpeed checked. I changed all that, went to a server I always get bumped from and played all morning. Of course, this means going back to getting creamed on every server I hang on, but I think the troubles are finally over, and are of my own devising in the first place.
By the way, if there's any DM fans out there, Form turned me on to the ur^ Clan's server. I highly recommend it, unless you hate getting beaten to a pulp every match.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Well actually, now that I've been playing on and off, I'm getting the same dam thing! Network play is hosed. Everywhere I go I'm the Mac Ghost who's been bumped off the server. This is really ruining the game for me. I've done some TRs, they seem fine. And I'd just sent a note to MacSoft telling them it was fixed
BTW, I saw {RA}Caveman on urclan's DOM server. Was getting bumped off that one too. Check your server browser for ur^ servers, and you may meet some folks you know (for those of you who can actually stay online).
This just in: I just got a note from MacSoft support questioning whether or not I'd really gotten a fix. From what I gather, something got crunched by the patch and I'm looking at a long boring tedious re-install.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
More joy. After re-installing from the CD, attempting to run the patch produces a false version mismatch. The Patch throws up a dialog stating that I already have 2225 installed.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
I removed my entire UT2k3, re-installed, and was able to run the patch. Installing over my original UT is what gave the version mismatch.
I've copied all the maps, etc., back, and edited fresh INIs. It's too early to tell if this will help.
I tried a botmatch on a ur^ DM server, and had some serious loss of frames again: even though I was still in the match, my screen wouldn't update for 30 sec.s or more, weapons wouldn't fire, I'd be running blind in the game, and not see the frag that killed me. The game would only refresh after I'd been killed.
All in all I'm reaching my frustration level with this game. Maybe it's my bandwidth, maybe the game just shouldn't be played on a dual 800, but only a G5. I don't know.

Brain, I would think that if it was a problem with an underpowered machine then your results with a local machine bot match should be pretty crappy also

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Keep in mind that some maps are terrible for online play, due to their hi poly count. I have one or two on the server that are like that. One is CTF Botanical garden.
It may not be you Brain it maybe the map. When testing make sure you use a stock map. I've played the demo on my DP500. MB I'll get the Mac disks from Flea and see if I can duplicate the issues. This may take a couple weeks to do and I don't have Panther. So I may not even get same results. Does MacSoft offer any help? They should.
Logical Trouble Shooting steps.
Wipe UT2K3, new install, update it so it works with Panther.
Turn off any file sharing, that is only going to suck bandwidth.
Play it at the default settings and see how it goes. The only change I would do is the net connection, otherwise leave everything.
If that goes well, now start with small changes. Like add maps, then do some more play testing.
The last thing I would do is manual ini changes, and I would never copy a old ini file. Change the new ones that were made with the new install. It's good that you did that but I wouldn't have changed them right away tho.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Thanks for the tips, Levi. I appeciate it, and of course thank you DocB.
For my next magic trick I will reinstall for the fourth time, and leave out the patch entirely. MacSoft support said the patch isn't absolutely needed, esp. if you have an nVidia card. Most of the patch is fixing ATI- related bugs; read: we didn't test it with an nVidia card, I'll betcha.
Here's a TR to a game server I've had trouble with. Any TR experts out there? It all looks the same to me.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Another handy troubleshooting tool is the log file. It's located in ~/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2003/System/UT2003.log. Most problems that cause crashes or hangs will be near the end of the file and seem to be pretty clear.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
Thanks, Dana; I've had damn few crashes; I just can't seem to stay in many matches for long.
I'm looking over the log now. I see some audio problems with the Announcer I chose: Evil (I hate the other Announcers).
Here's a sample:
Warning: Failed to load 'Sound AnnouncerEvil.uax.3_minutes_remain': Failed to find object 'Sound AnnouncerEvil.uax.3_minutes_remain'
Log: ALAudio: AL_INVALID_VALUE in RegisterSound (generating buffer)
Would you care to change your Announcer to Evil for a while, then check your log and get back to me here? I'll switch my Annoucer to the default and see what happens.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
I chose the dorky default Announcer, and have played for quite a while on several servers that had regularly bumped me. I hope this takes care of it. I'd like to spend more time trying not to suck so bad at this game, than tweaking it.

Re: 2k3 + Panther + patch = bumped offline
There are a number of announcer voices out there. Heck even Eko made one using his wife's voice. Maybe one of those will work better for you.
Also I'd sent a copy of the log to MacSoft's support. They may have some better news and other things to try.

Brain, I saw similar warnigs in the UT.log prior to the patch when I tried playing around with announcer voices. Never saw "Log: ALAudio: AL_INVALID_VALUE in RegisterSound (generating buffer)." It never seemed to make a difference in online play. I have not played with the voices since the patch (now after your post am a little afraid to).
I would recommend emailing a full description + logs including any UT crash logs (found in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter) to MacSoft and possibly to Ryan Gordon directly.
