App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
This is very strange. I'm trying to install Toast 5.2 and i'm getting a box which says "this installation requires a system folder on the destination drive. the installation has been cancelled" and an "error 1008:,-43 File not found".
Hello? Of course there's a system folder. So I tried many solutions, including trashing anything Toast-related on the computer and even did a clean install of Panther, with no luck. What the heck?
The only knowledge I could find online was about the problem happening with Quicktime or Extensis Suitcase in 10.2, and they recommended creating a folder in the classic extensions called "<application> Preferences" but that didn't do anything.
Any advice at all appreciated... I'm on a Dual 867 (running Panther of course)
best

Maybe Toast is incompatible with Panther. (I hope not.) You might want to email Roxio about this one.

Re: App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
Do you have you drive partitioned? I.e., OS X on one and OS 9 on another? If not, disregard the following comment... I had your problem when I tried installing Toast in OS X and had my drive partitioned as such. I couldn't install Toast on my OS X partition because there wasn't a system folder and Toast material for it to go off of. I ended installing it on the OS 9 partition.

When I had to reinstall my retail version of Toast, I had to boot in OS 9 to do it, and then I had to run the OS X updaters from the Roxio website.

I'm not partitioned, I do have a 2nd drive installed but its for storage only, and I'm not trying to install it there. Toast does work in Panther, because the same version works for me at work, where I'm also on Panther.

You aren't by chance, installing the classic version, are you?
I don't think that the X version of toast installs anything into your system folder.

Re: App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
wow, that would be ridiculous if that's why it was happening. i'm pretty sure it's not the classic version, since the installer runs like an OSX app, but i better make sure i guess

Re: App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
Interesting. I know this is probably no help at all, but the Toast 6 installation is just a 'drag this folder to your applications folder' ordeal.
Also, it may be that the incompatibility itself is uncompatible with panther, not the program. Could be that while the program was installed and then the computer upgraded to 10.3, it runs fine, but will not install in the 10.3 envoirnment.
Or, I could be way off.

Re: App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
that's an interesting theory... i think i'm going to copy the Toast 5.2 folder that works on my work computer to a disk and copy it to my home computer and see if that works.

Re: App won't install in 10.3 - can't find system folder?
i have not been able to install toast 5.2 in any early panther builds, i now have the retail version, but i also have toast 6, and its working fine. so im guessing toast 5.2 is just not compatible at all with panther. I had it installed on one of my drives, and it woudln't even run.

Roxio's Toast 5.2.1 runs fine on Panther for me.

Fixed!
I just copied the Toast 5.2. app folder from my work computer, and all's well. I guess it was just the installer.
Now all i gotta do is get BitTorrent working...
thanks for the suggestions, all
