UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
Found this on UnrealAdmin today and wanna share the info. I've had this problem on Win clients too. I'm going to disable the stats for now and see how it goes.
PROBLEM
=======
UT2003 Mac Retail clients fail to connect to some maps on my dedicated LAN server (WinNT V2225). The Mac client contacts the server, loads the correct map, the Player appears briefly on the scoreboard of PC players, then they disappear. The Mac Player can still fly through the map, they do not see anyone else on their scoreboard, they cannot see or hear other players if the game is running, they cannot join the game (pressing 'Fire' does nothing). Is this what some people call a "Ghost" player?
Most maps are fine. Maps that exhibit the problem will do so consistently. Restarting the server and the clients has no effect. This happens with both official and 3rd-party maps. I have seen this on BR and TDM gametypes so far. The game can be running or waiting for Ready signals. The Mac people can play these same maps locally (Instant Action and Listen server) with no problems. Another Mac user can connect to their Listen server.
WORK-AROUND
===========
Macsoft tech support responded to my e-mail within 4 hours. That was impressive. They are aware of the problem and are working on a long-term solution. The problem is related to having the "Collect Stats" option enabled on the server. I am running LocalStats V107.
Have the Mac clients delete their preference folders in their /Users/username/Library/Application Support folder, and then reconfigure the game. The server should leave "Collect Stats" disabled.
The other thing that helps is for the clients to join using the "Favorites" tab, rather than the other tabs.
Anyone that wants to post anti-Mac responses should realize that it is pointless and a waste of everyone's bandwidth.

How about anti-Macsoft/Epic/UT2k3? (in no particular order)

Thank you Levi. You are a good man! DocB gave me the downlow on fixing the new patch as well, so I look forward to seeing you on the server. Yay!

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
One of my favorite 3rd party maps, DM-CampingGrounds2003, exhibits this bug. This wasn't happening to me on this map before the patch. Too bad, it's a great conversion of one of the best QuakeIII maps ever.

Have the Mac clients delete their preference folders in their /Users/username/Library/Application Support folder, and then reconfigure the game.
Umm, so we should just delete everything in UT's Application Support folder? There's no actual Preference folder(s) in the Application Support folder, only the usual Cache, System, .INIs, etc.
Do they think a lot of server admins are going to change the the Collect Stats settings? I realize they say they're working on a long term solution, but in the meantime ... UT99?

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
OK - I whacked my .ini files in my App Support folder and reconfigured UT2K3 and then hopped on Llev's server via my Favorites tab. The map was "CTF-Addien-Dwy" (looks like a couple libraries in a run-down mansion with caves, of all things) and I still had the Ghost Player problem. I tried turning the stats tracking on and off and it made no difference. Is there something else that needs to be cleaned up in that folder?

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
Don't know what to tell you guys. Other that I'm strugling too and this is with a windows client. Currently my solution is to keep knocking on the door until I'm in.
Right now the stats are off. Only things left to do are to start removing/updating mods. I know MapVote is at b11, so I'm behind there.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
Thanks for your help, Llev. I'll try removing various mods and things and try to keep track of anything that seems to make a difference. I'll post any progress I make here.
Thanks again! I love your server when I'm actually able to get on and play for real.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
I haven't run into this problem yet. Have had some problems with 3rd party maps not loading locally and online. Currently using the updated version on 10.2.8 but will probably install 10.3 Monday and see what happens.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
I'm starting to suspect my ISP in all of this trouble. I was on MA2 last playing GGs but would frequently lose my connection (you know, all the players start running into walls and corners, your weapons fire won't render, etc.), and then suddenly I'd be back in the game (and usually dead from running blind). This is similar to what's been happening in UT2k3.
The other players claimed they had some lag on MA2 last night, but I don't think they were getting frozen in the game like I was; can't be sure. All the while, I get low pings to MA2 and the UT2k3 servers I've found.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
Hey guys,
Well this morning I was greeted by a blue screen on the UT2K3 server. Since I was there made some changes. Over the weekend I pondered what was going on and came to the conclusion that I had better luck when it was configured like this.
First there are no longer any custom models. The last one Warboss is out. Stats are back on and use map default for bot count is back. This is the thing that made me think. When I first put up the server this was selected. Then I switched it to Min of 6 Max of 10. After that we had problems.
What this means, if you pick a 1 on 1 DM map the server will only allow 2 of you to play. i.e. If there are four of you and a 1v1 map is voted in, two of you will be dumped. You can do two things shut up and spec or b!tch about a map change.

Me too Loup. I've been playing off my laptop (Dell) with the same probs. I've had mixed results with connecting and reconnecting. Some times it has taken 4,5,6 tries.
I've been messing with this and researching the problem all morning. So far I've connected everytime with out probs. Maybe this current config is the key to stable play. We'll see how it goes.
I just don't like using the map default for players. Like I stated before, if we vote for a map that only supports 4 then only 4 is going to play.
Baby steps...if this goes well this week. Maybe on Friday I'll change only the player settings. Hope it all holds.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
This gohst thing was on your server btw. other than that it ran fine with a decent ping and no lag (that I could notice) except for once when my ping jumped to over 200 for a while, maybe 3 minutes. Were you on this moning(nov 3d) thought I saw you, or was it a bot with your nick ?

No, that was me. I've been messing around with the server, trying different things. Your ping spike was me doing something I'm sure.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
I'm pinging between 150 and 250 on this server, just FYI.
Is that acceptable for you? I'm not sure if that is good or bad for you.
I'm normally around 80ish on good servers.

Re: UT2K3 "Ghost Player" Fix
Well I may have found the answer to our riddle.
Double Clicking
Tonight I jumped on, used the Fav tab and double clicked my server to connect. Bing joined as a ghost. Disconnected and resisted my tempation to double click again. Instead I highlighted the server and clicked join at the bottom of the screen.
Lets try that tonight and see what happens.
Good to see humans on the server tonight. Great games everyone.
