Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
Has anyone had any experience with getting Java-based games on Pogo.com to work with Safari? I am specifically having no luck with Bridge (Card game). I really hate to say this, but it works flawlessly on Internet Explorer and not at all on Safari.
Any thoughts?

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
I tried Safari with Pogo several times while Safari was still in beta. Safari would crash every time. Safari used to be relatively stable for me, and then with 10.2.7, it would crash every time I used it. 10.2.8 didn't fix the problem, but Panther did. Panther includes Safari 1.1 (v100), which is not compatible with Jaguar. Wich OS, and which version of Safari are you running? Ever since Panther, I haven't had Safari crash one single time. I haven't tried running it on Pogo though. Maybe I'll give that a shot and see what happens.

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
I'm running panther, Safari 1.1.
I did go to the Pogo FAQ page. They say "we don't support Safari". That sux. I thought Java was supposed to be platform independent.

This thing is one of those Safari Debuggers that adds debug to your menu bar in Safari. Under that menu you can change your "browser ID" or something like that. This way a site thinks you are running a different browser. If they are rejecting you because of the browser this may help. Then again, it may not.

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
I thought the Java wasn't fixed. I was wrong. When you get the familiar blank screen with Java logo that indicates it isn't working...WAIT...give it 20 or so more seconds.
BTW, Bridge loads on Pogo for me.
Panther
Safari
Pop up Ads NOT blocked (I don't know if that makes a difference or not)

I've gotten that too. I have learned to be patient when the Java logo pops up. But my patience has always been rewarded. I wish there was something to show you that it was still loading/starting.

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
hmmm, interesting thread. Pogo's games have always worked perfectly in Safari for me. I do remember that they would freeze in IE after about 80% of the intermissions.
Patiently awaiting the G5 PowerBook.

They don't reject Safari. They just don't acknowledge its existence.

Yes it does! That makes all of the difference in the world! The game window is a pop-up window! For this reason alone, I wish Safari had an option to specify a site to allow a pop-up.

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
Snassa frassa (&*^%(&*^!!! I stayed up until 1:30 last night learning to play bridge. I won the last game 4100 to 1750 in a two hour match. I got 1700 points by defending and doubling a 4NT contract. I had 8 hearts with A,K, and Q with the lead to boot!!!

Re: Pogo Games, Java, and Safari
thanks for all the information folks. How do I allow pop-up windows?
Wouldnt it be nice if someone could write an applescript to toggle on-off the pop-ups.

cmd + k
Or just open the Safari menu. It's the fourth item down just under Preferences. No AppleScript required, no third party software for the system tray, no pron popping up randomly while your kids are playing Jump Start 3rd Grade.
It's going to be a long long time before I forgive you for suckering me into Bridge.
