Design Associations?

I was considering joining the Australian Graphic Designer Association (AGDA), but the more I read on their site, the more I feel it's a $200 a year forum! (not including the $110 joining fee).
Do agencies/studios like to see your a member of an association when job hunting or is it irrelevant to the end decision?

Any insight??

P.S.- I've been a graphic designer for about 6yrs, so would that experience over shadow any membership??

Re: Design Associations?

As far as getting a job, the association should have job searching resources. I don't think having the name on your resume would mean much, as anybody who pays the fees can join those associations.

Not to belittle them.
A lot of them are great. They should, for that money, do things for you such as:

Seminars
Guides
Workshops
Job Search assistance
Legal help (not by a lawyer, but some good resources to look up, forms to use, etc...)

My opinion is that they are a good resource if you can afford them, and can be most beneficial to the Freelancer/Small Studio.

Hope that helps.

Re: Design Associations?

It really depends on how that organization is set up. I am a professional member of the AIGA (American GA assoc) and I think it has been fairly great for me. I joined while still a student to savor the low price of membership but now that Im a professional to them the almost 300 is just...too much for my broke-ass.
Now...the job resources are worth it to me as is the networking. But some cities have terrible chapters who do absolutely nothing so you have to make sure the city you join through is worth your joining through.

It can be an extremely valuable tool.

bullsmurf! I can't hear you. Sound off like you got a  pair.
