Where have I been? I have never even heard of this body art. Is it new? It's sounds more painful than having laser eye surgery.

ya, none of this stuff is new.
Even in "civilized" western culture piercing is old, the Victorians were doing it 100 years ago (why do you think it's called a Prince Albert?)
