Finding out how to get the Macs online?
Our school is an evil empire that is now supplied with Dells, they are on three different T3 connections.
I figured I would plug in my iBook or the other Macs with ethernet, and get online somehow.
It didn't work at all, I tried fidgeting with the TCP/IP settings.
Anyone have any ideas?

I just plug an ethernet cable into my 'book at my school and it works.
I take it you made sure that it was looking for a connection over ehternet.

Re: Finding out how to get the Macs online?
our network has to be configured a certain way. Some networks will deny access toanymachine that isn't logged in using some goofy third-patrty security software. Your network will also have to assign IP addressed dynamically - if it doesn't, you're out of luck.
Assuming that a standard windows box with no extra software can be connected to your network, so can your iBook.
Here's an idea. Tell your building tech that you have a Dell laptop from home you want to use and ask how you're supposed to set it up. If he wants to come fiddle with it, say no, but try to get him (okay, or her) to give you directions, like in email or something. Then, just post the direction here (don't post specific IPs though, 'cuz that's a security risk) and one of us'll translate from Windows-eze to Maccish.
Deal?

Set the ethernet to run from DHCP. It should work. Give it about a minute to pick up the signal. You may have to restart, if necessary. But, it should work the first time through DHCP.
I know your IP.

Re: Finding out how to get the Macs online?
DHCP will only work if your system is running on DHCP. If this is the case like the post said before, change your settings to DHCP and then it should work fine.
If this is not the case then your Information Technology department probably assigns ip addresses to each machine on the network. Talk to your IT department and get an ip for your machine. They should supply you with the IP address, router address and maybe some other information that you will have to enter manually under TCP/IP.

Most schools I know of use DHCP so I would try that first and then ask the IT people if it doesn't work.

Is the school using a Novell network? Mine does, and while I havn't tried to connect (yet), I no you need another peice of softwere. Sorry, I forget the name, but I *think* it was on versiontracker.com. Good Luck.

Funny, my school had a Novell network and I could use DHCP. Maybe it was a combo network or something.
Maybe it was that other standard that I forgot its name (not TCP or IP).

Re: Finding out how to get the Macs online?
Your school may be restricting network access to known MAC adresses (all network devices, like ethernet and wireless network cards, have their own identifying code), so you won't be able to use your mac on that network unless you ask your school's admin to add your ethernet card's MAC adress to the accepted list.

Do you get an IP address? It's possible to get an IP address from a DHCP server and still need some kind of proxy(?) configuration to surf, e-mail etc.
