eMac can't look backwards...
So,
I bought a new eMac to be used as a pro tools machine... the latest version of Pro Tools is compatible with 10.2.6.
Guess what?
The new eMac ain't. Can't use it. Can't install it, can't recognize it, can't touch it. Firmware won't use any OS before 10.3. Well, I'll be. Now I got this white blob of a thing on my desk not doing a dang thing.
I've looked all over the net and Apple's site; nowhere is it mentioned (from what I could find) that the new firmware is ONLY 10.3 compatible.
Just a warning to anyone getting an eMac who might need older OS's for some of their apps, the eMac isn't gonna do it...

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
Ehh..dont take this the wrong way, but i dont think that the eMac was in any way designed to be a protools machine..unless you are just doing some simple stuff, like in protools LE or PT free or something

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
yep, that's right. simple stuff. I got the 24 track demo playing on my other G4 machine...sounds great and it functions fine. (the other mac is my work/graphics computer) anyway, 24 tracks is enough for me. i ain't a pro at this, just doing hobby stuff.
i was posting to let folks know that the new machines are only usable with the new os. ...not really a pro tools post; that was just my personal situation.

It's always been something like that. My 2 iMacs (350 & 700 Mhz G3s) only work with OS 9 and later (using Jaguar on the 700)

Well my 733 has been pretty versitile. any mac OS I've put on there from 7.5 to 10.2.6 it's been able to boot. I was suprised when I couldn't get Jaguar running on this eMac.

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
Well, not too long ago, people were using (and many still use) machines as powerful or less powerful than the eMac for not only ProTools, but Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc. A GHz G4 with plenty of RAM (and you can even BTO it w/a 160GB HD) is nothing to sneeze at. It may not be a G5, but it's no slug...

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
How did you get a G3 or G4 to boot up off anything less than
Mac OS 9.0.4 without using a hack like MacBuddy or MacHelper?

Well, all my G3s came with 8.6 so that's no prob but they sure as hell won't run 7. I'm guessing the Yikes and Sawtooth G4s would boot 8.6 as well (Everymac backs me up on that). But I've got a few r2 G4 400s in the office that won't boot less than 9.0.4.

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
Sorry, brain fart...the media 100 machine originally had the older OS, then we moved the M100 card to a newer G4. In my mind, I just usually think about "Media100"...

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
If I remember correctly, it's been pretty standard that apple machines will never be able to use a system below what it ships with. ie if it ships with 10.3, 10.2.x is a no go in the same way that 7.x.x would be a no go. in fact, I think it extends to point upgrades as well. ie if a new machine toady (for instance, new imacs) shipps with 10.3.1, you won't be able to put 10.3.0 on it and get it boot.
obviously, people have thrown some hacks together, but generally, this is the rule as I understand it.

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering if the new cheaper ones would boot older OS's if you supplied them. Guess not.
Everybody'll have to pick up 1Ghz combo refurbs to run older stuff now (if they only want the latest all in one) Apple sold out of the new ones though there might be a few around at some resellers. I see that 1.25Ghz dual boot towers are also still available.

Re: eMac can't look backwards...
Not being able to downgrade the OS has been a standard part of nearly all computers for at least a decade now I think. It is tough to buy machines in the interim between major releases because a machine that comes with a point update renders any retail copies of the major version fairly ineffective if you happen to have problems. Of course, that's the theory behind including a Restore DVD so you aren't screwed.
But I don't think any computer company would want you to buy a new machine and then put a 5 year old OS on it.
