Re: You Have GraphicConverter........Right?
i've heard people promoting graphic converter for a long time... what i am wondering is if i already have photoshop, am i missing out on something?
Yes indeed. Photoshop does not handle nearly as many file formats as graphic converter does.
if photoshop cant read it there is no good reason to look at it
Like the favicon (.ico) that safari shows for this site?
Those can be read (and made) with IconFactory's IconBuilder plug-in for Photoshop, though.
Non sequitur.
Yeah, I think that comic strip is funny, too.

Because I can see and I can feel, and you can see and you can feel
So why don't we both either stand up and fight
Or at least together we'll call it a night.

Hardly. It extends the functionality of opening and even creating files in the .ico format to Photoshop. It is relevant to the statements preceding it via it's connection to Photoshop and opening the .ico format.
Besides, GraphicConverter's ability to open and save files in the .ico format has always been spotty and limited, at best, in my experience. Half the time it doesn't properly open or save the file with the correct transparency/alpha information, and the other half of the time it doesn't save a file which is even useable on a Windows computer, where the .ico format originates and has its most use.
IconBuilder via Photoshop, on the other hand, opens and saves .ico files without any issues, making it a better tool for handling those files, anyway.

It was irrelevant because Photoshop does not support the .ico format (and many others) whereas graphic converter does, hence the name.

Re: You Have GraphicConverter........Right?
Not done. Not until the latecomers have a say.
I think GC and Photoshop complement each other. They're not trying to be the same thing.
Photoshop is a powerful editor.
GC is, like it says, a converter, with some basic editing features. For instance, I'll use it when I take a screenshot, open, crop, resize, and convert it to a jpeg.
If you're looking for a "free" app like GC, then ToyViewer may be to your liking. If you're handy with X11, you can use XV or Image Magick. Of the two, Image Magick is better.
Hey!!! Was that Pithy? Got a twenty?

GraphicConverter is like Adobe Photoshop's afterbirth.
