CD-Audio extraction speed

I'm using DBPowerAMP MusicConcerter to extract Wave files. My CD-RW is a 16x10x40x and it can't seem to extract audio faster than 12x. MY 52x CD-ROM and 16x DVD-ROM (CD-Read = 48x) don't even go that fast.

Oh, second problem. If I encode an MP3, even from a WAV file already on the hard drive, it only extracts at 8x or 9x, which wouldn't be too bad, except that  I have a 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon and my old 1 GHz encoded at 7x on a good day.

Is this because I haven't registered my shareware?

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

Sounds like something is a-miss. My celeron 300A encodes mp3's at 128kbs off a 12x4 Plextor burner at 5x , and off the hard drive at about 10.5x using MusicMatch Jukebox 7.

Your rip speeds off your optical drives are slow but believable, but the wav to mp3 encoding is way off. Try a different shareware mp3 encoder.

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) is different than straight data reading, almost always slower than rated and very drive-dependent. Encoding, of course, is something entirely different. Are things better for you with Jukebox 7?

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

Encoding straight from a CD peaked at 12x in Jukebox 7, but CPU utilization is only hovering around 20%.

I can't figure out how to get Jukebox to encode a wav file from the HD. That should fly.

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

To encode a .wav to mp3 in Jukebox 7, select 'File>convert' an applet window will pop up and you can convert from wav to mp3, mp3 to wav, or even mp3 to mp3 at different bitrates.
Now see if you can beat a Celeron 300A (I'm thinking maybe you can  wink  )

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

Musicmatch Jukebox 7 - converted 2:51 wav file to 192 kbps MP3 in a tad over 3 seconds, 13:17 WAV file to 192 kbps MP3 in 17 seconds.

46x MP3 Encoding. Baby, that's more like it!

Thanks everybody. I guess I'll have to look for a new CD-ROM with faster DAE or something... grrrr...

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

You should be sure that your CD Rom is set for DMA. You might also change which IDE bus it's on; depending on what it's sharing that bus with, you may see an improvement.

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

also, i recomend "CDex" for CD extraction. Its a good free program and has CDDB built in, I always use it for encoding.

'tis already UDMA. The 16xDVD shares the secondary ATA133 bus with my 16x10x40 CD-RW. 52x CD-ROM is slaved to the HD on the primary ATA133 Bus.

CDex didn't go any faster - rips to WAv at about 9x tops.

Re: CD-Audio extraction speed

Just wanted to put in the good word for Exact Audio Copy. It won't extract as fast as other rippers, but that's because it does rigorous error checking on a sector-by-sector basis. The result is perfect rips, nearly every time. I've used it with some horribly scratched up CDs, and it comes out with nary a pop or click.
